In this edition:

Two Modes of Productivity

Short-order Cook vs. Chef — As we move through our days we enter and exit many different modes of productivity. Two of those modes can be described in terms of cooking.

When you're playing the role of short-order cook, you're generally getting a bunch of smaller things done in quick succession. I often get into this mode when I fall into a moment of housekeeping. I'll find one success triggers the next and so on until suddenly I've pushed a bunch of "orders through the window".

The role of the chef comes into play for those tasks and projects that require more time, planning, focus, and/or creativity. I think of it in terms of crafting something, such as this newsletter. It takes a certain mindset and the carving out of time to honor that mindset in order to get TFF out each and every week. This process seems similar to what a chef may do while creating a new menu for their restaurant.

What sort of tasks fall into your short-order cook mode vs chef mode?

A Book I've Started

Permission to Proceed —  This may be the very first book I saw on the topic of ADHD and it's certainly been on my reading list for a number of years. I kept telling myself I should get a physical copy and get it signed at the conference.

A conversation about permission this week led me to purchase the Kindle version and I'm happy to have "finally started" reading this interesting book.

An Invitation

The 2019 ADHD Conference — Registration is now open for this year's International Conference on ADHD. Please consider joining me and hundreds of folks dedicated to helping those of us with ADHD. This year we meet November 7th through 9th in Philadelphia. For more information, check out ADDA's Conference Page

An Article

ADHD and Self-Compassion — This article from CHADD does a good job at capturing something that's come up more and more recently. Negative self-talk does little more than making us feel bad about ourselves, yet for some, it's a daily habit for many ADHDers.

A New Term

Sabbatacation — On Tuesday I'll be starting a short break from regular meetings and appointments to take advantage of the July 4th holiday here in the US. We won't be going anywhere but I will be taking some time to decompress, catch up on movies and generally enjoy the space in my calendar.

But, my brain is also looking forward to getting bigger planning done and knocking out projects that have been stalled for the past few months. So I guess you could say I'm spending the week on vacation and sabbatical. A sabbatacation!

Parting Thought

It turns out I'm not the first person to have thought about the combination of sabbatical and vacation. When I went to register the domain sabbatication.com (because of course, I tried), I found it was taken.

Luckily sabbatacation.com wasn't taken and I kinda like that term better anyway. 😊
