Sandy beaches are precious—as the first line of defence against coastal storms, and for the ecosystem services they provide. However, the world over, beaches are getting eroded-- due to the interruption of flow of sand that nourishes them, due to sand mining, and due to effects of sea-level rise.
At a webinar on July 4th , IHE-Delft’s ProfessorDano Roelvinkwill discuss the nature of these problems, and how they may be exacerbated by sea-level rise and changes in wind and wave climate. He will also present a range of solutions—hard and soft, engineering-heavy and nature-based.
Among others, he will present ShorelineS, a model being developed to forecast how coastlines will evolve as a result of the various forces acting upon them. ShorelineS is being developed as a tool that can be used not only by scientists but also by engaged citizens, to see how human impact has altered coasts and what are the different strategies to mitigate/adapt to it. (It is being developed atIHE Delftin collaboration withDeltares).
