City Council Meeting Summary

Here’s a few highlights from the June 24 City Council meeting. Watch the meeting in the link above:

  • Council adopted the 2019-2020 budget, which begins Monday, July 1. They also adopted the 2020-2024 Capital Improvement Plan, which helps prioritize funding for City projects.
  • The Mayor made a motion to direct staff to review what other cities are doing to preserve the affordability and long-term stability of mobile home parks and return to the City Council with a recommendation. Council approved the motion.
  • In an important step toward long-term protection of Salem’s drinking water, the City Council approved the contracting method for construction of the ozone treatment at the Geren Island Water Treatment Facility. Known as Construction Manager/General Contracting (CMGC) this method brings the owner, designer and contractor together at the beginning of the project and significantly increases project success as measured by cost and schedule.
  • Council voted to hold a public hearing on a Planning Administrator decision regarding a proposed 34-lot subdivision located on the 500 to 600 blocks of Salem Heights Avenue.
The next Salem City Council meeting will be held on July 8. See City Council meeting agendas.

Salem City Council meetings typically occur on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month. Meetings start at 6 p.m. and are held in Council Chambers, 555 Liberty Street SE, RM 240. Meeting agendas are typically posted the Thursday afternoon prior to the scheduled meeting. Meetings are free and open to the public. All meetings are streamed live on the City of Salem Facebook Page, and Capital Community Television YouTube channel

Salem Drinking Water Update

Salem’s water remains clean and safe to drink. Our treatment continues to work. Because cyanotoxins are still present in the raw, untreated river water coming down from the North Santiam watershed, we are drawing water samples and testing water seven days a week. We are reporting test results 24 hours from drawing the water sample. Test results are posted on our website.

The location where the raw, untreated river water goes into our water treatment facility is called Middle Intake. The location where the cleaned and treated water leaves the drinking water treatment system and is sent to your homes and businesses is called Aldersgate. Our testing at Aldersgate shows that the water remains clean and safe to drink. If this changes we will let you know through our community alert system, the media, and our social media, including our Facebook page. And, if we are in a health advisory, you can expect to see us reporting daily results in social media and on our website.

Friday Fun Fact

One of those facilities is Pringle Community Hall. It is a great indoor venue for parties and events for larger groups. It can accommodate up to 228 people, and includes a full kitchen. Go here to book it for your next event→
