FROM THE CORNER OFFICE
Hello Chaverim,

June has been a busy month!  It began at the annual meeting with the voting in of new Board members Aron Katz, Mitchell Singer, and Shoshana Zatz; and the new Board co-presidents, Steve Cohen and Barry Klein.  Staff has been working diligently on building the new and improved CBH website, preparing for the Partner annual pledge mailing and the launch of Hebrew and Religious school enrollment in mid-July, and the closing out of the 2018-2019 fiscal year on June 30th.  Moreover, we are preparing for the transition of long-time Gan Haverim Director Rhoda Rohnstock from her current role and will be welcoming new Interim Director Trudi Schwarz on July 1st

As business at CBH continues to transform, I want to provide some information on the many changes you will be seeing:
  • The CBH website is shaping up beautifully with new formatting and functionality.  We will be launching during the week of July 8th.
  • You will receive a new and improved Partner Pledge Form in the mail next week.  The form has been reformatted and we are introducing new payment options for your ease.
    • New this year — we are asking Partners to pay 10% of their pledge at the time of pledging.
    • New this year — both your pledge and a payment are needed in order to receive your High Holiday tickets.
    • New this year — we are asking Partners to make an initial payment at the time you register their child(ren) for Hebrew and/or Religious School.
  • In order for CBH to finish the year fiscally strong and sound please fulfill your 2018-2019 pledge by June 30th if you have not done so already.  If you have any questions, please contact Wendy Haworth, CBH’s bookkeeper at: accounting@bethaverim.org.
I would like to acknowledge and thank Rhoda for all of her years of dedicated service as the Director of Gan Haverim.  She is well loved and it will be wonderful to have her return as a teacher in August after taking very well-deserved time off.  Please provide a warm welcome to Trudi when you see her.  We are looking forward to her bringing her experience, enthusiasm and new ideas to Gan Haverim from the Davis Lab School where she worked as a Lead Teacher since 2007.

Also, I want to say so-long and not good-bye to Jessica Calland, CBH’s Social Media Coordinator.  She is moving from Davis and will be missed.  Although she is moving, Jessica will continue producing the Weekly Spiritual Happenings and managing CBH’s Face Book page.

There will be construction occurring on campus this summer, similar to last summer.  The education building will be getting a new roof in July and three additional security cameras will be installed on campus.

Speaking of security, there are plans in the works with the Davis Police Department to schedule “Coffee with a Cop” during the month of August for Partners and Gan Haverim families to get to know local law enforcement officials.

In recognition of the July 4th holiday next week, the e-tone will be taking a break.

In writing this, it seems summer will be over before we know it. Wishing everyone a fun, safe, and happy summer.

L’Shalom,

TIKKUN OLAM/SOCIAL ACTION
Ruby Kubby Adler's Mitzvah Project

At my bat mitzvah over Memorial Day weekend, I chanted from the Torah from the Book of Leviticus: chapter 25, lines 1-28.  In this part of the story G-d is speaking to Moses on mount Sinai and telling him that when the people come to the new land they will have to work and harvest their crops for six years.  On the seventh year they are commanded to have a “sabbatical” year and let their land, and themselves, have a rest (which I think is great).  G-d says that the people shall feed themselves, as well as their maids, servants, and even their animals, from the produce of the sixth year and whatever grows naturally during the seventh year.  Once the people have gone through this process seven times, that is, after 49 years, the next year, the 50th year, is called the “jubilee” year.  This year is for everyone to celebrate and feast on their beautiful crops...and everyone should treat each other well.  Any land a person was forced to sell since the previous jubilee year will be returned to them in the current jubilee year and all loans are to be cancelled.

G-d says to Moses if the people can follow these rules they may stay in the new land safely.  G-d also says that they do not have to worry about enough food because G-d will give them enough for three years: the sabbatical year, when nothing is planted, and the years before and after the sabbatical year.  Finally, G-d commands that if someone is poor people should help them.  Then if they grow rich someday they should help others.  If someone has to become a servant because they cannot support themselves they are to be freed at the jubilee year.

This lesson relates to my Mitzvah Project.  Having gone to Cesar Chavez Elementary school from kindergarten through 6th grade, I have always felt connected to others kids who speak Spanish and felt that I would like to do something to help native Spanish speakers in our community.  Hearing what was happening at the border, where children are being separated from their families, I decided that this was the place for me to do something to help.  Early on, I learned about what was happening at Saint Martin’s Church to sponsor two families from Guatemala and I knew this offered a great chance to help those who could really use the support.  I even got to meet one of the families that is here.  The mom is due to have her fourth child here in Davis and she is receiving her care through Communicare.  The kids are going to Montgomery Elementary and playing lots of soccer.  They all looked very happy to be here although I am sure it is hard to be so far from home.

This project is important to me because I believe that everybody has a right to this land if they want to make a life here.  I want to live in a society like that of our ancestors where we all have chances to start fresh, where a good life can exist for all.

I do NOT believe that we should be tearing families apart.  I cannot even imagine how it would feel for a child who has to leave their parents.  I do not believe that this should be happening because it is not fair, not just, and not loving.  I think we should be supporting each other to be closer, not pushing each other apart.

Over the past months, I have been setting up a table where I tell people about the Families Together Project and about what is happening at our southern border in order to raise awareness of the issue.  Also, as a way of raising some funds to help I offer them an opportunity to paint a wooden sign with a positive word or saying that they can take or give as a gift, in exchange for their donation to my project.  So, not only did this raise some money but it also spread positive vibes.  I am happy to know that the money I am raising is helping families right here in Davis.

If you would like to contribute to this important project please make a check out to St. Martin's Episcopal Church.  In the note section write:  Families Together Project (Ruby Adler).

B'Shalom,

Ruby Kubby Adler
Do you know of a local activity that congregation members should be informed about that will better our community and improve our world?  Please let us know and submit an item to the e-tone.

תיקון עולם     Tikkun Olam

Contemporary usage of the phrase shares with the rabbinic concept of mipnei tikkun ha-olam a concern with public policy and societal change and with the kabbalistic notion of tikkun, the idea that the world is profoundly broken and can be fixed only by human activity.

Tikkun olam, once associated with a mystical approach to all mitzvot, now is most often used to refer to a specific category of mitzvot involving work for the improvement of society — a usage perhaps closer to the term’s classical rabbinic origins than to its longstanding mystical connotations.

The Jewish Cats Calendar

Yes, a Jewish Cats Calendar.

Why shouldn't there be a calendar that includes both cat pictures and the Jewish holidays?

That is the idea behind the Jewish Cats Calendar from Ben Yehuda Press.

The Jewish Cats Calendar features beautiful felines in gorgeous repose amid the sacred texts of our people and otherwise involved in Jewish observance.  It also features a full Jewish calendar, including holidays, Hebrew dates, weekly Torah portions. and select candle lighting times for cities from Jerusalem to Kathmandu.

Pre-order your calendar for $18 now through this Kickstarter campaign.  That will let us print this year's calendar. If we can't reach our $1000 goal, your credit card will not be charged and the calendars will not be printed.
This section of the Weekly E-tone will be dedicated to interesting samples of prose writing (essays, articles, short fiction), poetry, photographs (dare we consider videos?) and whatever else is submitted by our readers to be shared with the e-tone audience.  Bring your creative work and ideas to our attention by way of our e-tone submission form.  Naturally, editorial discretion will apply.
