CHUMASH

Parshas Shelach - Shishi with Rashi

Today in Chumash we learn about a very special mitzvah that’s PERFECT to learn on a Friday — Hafroshas Challah! We also learn about the Korban that we need to give if the Sanhedrin made a mistake that caused all the Yidden to serve Avodah Zara.

When the Yidden come into Eretz Yisroel, they will have to give some of their dough as a present to Hashem, by giving it to the Kohen. This is called Hafroshas Challah! (Nowadays, we burn the challah dough.)

If all of the Yidden make a mistake and serve Avodah Zarah, the Yidden need to bring a korban of a bull (with its Mincha and Nesech like we learned yesterday) as a Korban Olah, and a goat as a Korban Chatas.

And once they bring that korban, “Venislach Lechol Adas Bnei Yisroel, VelaGer HaGar Besocham, Ki Lechol HaAm Bishgaga.” Hashem will forgive all of the Yidden, because it was a mistake.

TEHILLIM

119 (first half)

Today’s Tehillim is the first half of Kapitel Kuf-Yud-Tes.

Today’s Tehillim is very special! We start the LONGEST kapitel in the whole Tehillim, kapitel Kuf-Yud-Tes! This kapitel is so long that we don’t even say the whole thing in one day — it is split up between Yom Chof-Hey and Yom Chof-Vov!

This kapitel has 8 pesukim for each letter of the Alef Beis, in order. The pesukim talk about the Torah and mitzvos, and each posuk has at least one of these 10 words (that mean Torah or mitzvos) in it:

1) Derech
2) Torah
3) Edus
4) Pekudim
5) Mitzvah
6) Amirah
7) Dibur
8) Mishpat
9) Tzedek
10) Chukim

One of the pesukim that starts with Alef is “Az Lo Eivosh Behabiti El Kol Mitzvosecha.” “When I look at all of your mitzvos, I won’t be embarrassed.” (The Rambam uses this as an introduction to the Mishneh Torah, the whole set of the halachos in Rambam!)

This teaches us that if we look carefully at all of the 613 mitzvos of Hashem (the Rambam teaches them all to us), we will always be proud Yidden!

TANYA

Shaar Hayichud Veha'emunah Perek Zayin

Today the Alter Rebbe explains from the Zohar how we can say that Hashem is EVERYWHERE, even in not kavodike places.

Where is Hashem?

Everyone knows the answer to that question — Hashem is everywhere!

But in the time of the Alter Rebbe, some people (and even some big Talmidei Chachomim) were trying to learn about Hashem from what it says in Kisvei HoArizal, and they made a mistake. They were learning about tzimtzum, how Hashem has to “make Himself smaller” and hide in the world, and they thought it meant that Hashem is too holy to be in dirty, disgusting places.

Since it isn’t kavodik to say that Hashem is in such yucky places, they thought tzimtzum meant that Hashem goes away from there, and watches carefully, but from far away.

Of course, we know that can’t be true! The Alter Rebbe told us yesterday that the emunah we have inside us tells us that it can’t be. We know that Hashem knows everything, and Hashem is one, and we know that no place in the world can be separate from Hashem!

Today and for the next few days, the Alter Rebbe will prove this to us from what it says in Zohar.

Hashem isn’t like a regular person.

We don’t like to be in a disgusting place. Why? Because it makes us feel yucky too. Why don’t we like to be in a dangerous place? Because we are scared we will hurt ourselves. But that’s not how it works for Hashem!

The Zohar explains that Hashem gives chayus to the whole world and isn’t bothered or pained by anything that is inside. Hashem gives us chayus in the winter and summer — but Hashem doesn’t get cold or hot! Hashem makes day and night — but Hashem doesn’t feel that it’s dark!

So it doesn’t matter that we say that Hashem is in a bathroom or in a not nice place! Even though Hashem gives it chayus, it doesn’t affect Him like it does to a person.

HAYOM YOM

Chof-Hey Sivan

Today’s Hayom Yom teaches us who we should speak to about things that bother us.

Shlomo HaMelech said in his SeferMishlei” that “Daaga BeLev Ish Yashchena” — “if a person is worried about something, ‘Yashchena.’”

What does “Yash’chena” mean? The Gemara tells us two things it could mean.

1) One meaning is to try to forget about it — just try not to think about it so you don’t worry.

2) The second meaning is to talk about it with other people.

The Tzemach Tzedek says that “other people” just means that in Gashmius it’s a different person. But in their feeling, they are really together and one with you, because they feel your pain.

These are the kind of people we should share our problems with, and this is the way we should be when we listen to someone else’s pain.

SEFER HAMITZVOS

Shiur #299 - Mitzvas Lo Saasei #236

In today’s Sefer Hamitzvos, we learn (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #236) that not only is it not allowed for someone to lend with Ribbis (interest), it’s not even allowed for someone to BORROW from a Yid with Ribbis! So even if the person we’re borrowing from doesn’t know about the mitzvah, we’re not allowed to borrow from him and pay interest.

RAMBAM

Hilchos Malveh VeLoveh

Perek Yud-Tes: One of the things we learn in today’s Rambam is that when the Beis Din needs to take away someone’s field to pay back a loan, they shouldn’t take the best field, and they shouldn’t take the worst field — they should take the middle kind, the “beinonis.” (Really, Torah says that the nicest way to do it is to take the worst field away, but the Chachomim were afraid nobody would want to make any more loans if they did that. That’s why they made the halacha that we should take from the beinonis.)

In Perek Chof, we learn about what the Beis Din should do if someone doesn’t have a lot of money or property, and TWO people come to the Beis Din because their loans weren’t paid back. Who gets paid back first? The halacha is that whoever’s loan was made first gets paid back first. If both were at the same time, whoever went to the Beis Din first gets paid back first!

Perek Chof-Alef has halachos about taking a field that used to belong to the person who borrowed money, but now he sold it to someone else. If it is worth more money, who gets the extra money?

RAMBAM PEREK ECHOD

Hilchos Metamei Mishkav U'Moshav - Perek Daled

Sometimes a woman is not counted as tomei for a day before she finds out she was tomei — we learn about when. If she is tomei, her clothes can become tomei too! We learn how to make them tahor again.

DARKEI HACHASSIDUS

Hachana L'Gimmel Tammuz

The Rebbe helps us make our emunah strong, and to use all of our kochos to bring the Geulah!

In the maamarVe’ata Tetzaveh”, the last maamar we were zoche to receive from the Rebbe, the Rebbe teaches us about the avodah of Yidden in our time.

Just like an olive needs to be squeezed for the oil to come out, the etzem of our neshama only comes out when we are “squeezed” by something bothering us.

When Yidden lived in places like Russia, where they weren’t allowed to keep Yiddishkeit, that was very hard for the Yidden! But that hard time made the etzem of their neshamos come out, which gave them the koach to do the mitzvos anyway!

Nowadays, we don’t have those kind of problems, Boruch Hashem. But the emunah which comes from our Etzem Haneshama still needs to shine!

There is a Moshe Rabbeinu in every generation, who makes the emunah of the Yidden in his time strong and helps them act the way Hashem wants with all of their kochos.

How? The Rebbe helps us feel the pain that Moshiach isn’t here yet. The Rebbe shows us how we should be bothered that we can’t see the light of Hashem, that the Beis Hamikdash is not yet built, and that the Geulah isn’t in the world. This “squeezes” us and makes the etzem of our neshama start to shine!

This will help us use ALL of our kochos for Hashem, and do everything we can to bring the Geulah.

TEFILLAH

Kabolas Shabbos

In Kabolas Shabbos on Friday night, we start off with six kapitelach of Tehillim. These correspond to the six days of the week. The last one, “Mizmor LeDovid, Havu LaHashem,” is the one that corresponds to Friday.

After this, we say the paragraph of Ana Bekoach, which has 42 words. The first letters of all of these words together spell one of the names of Hashem! We always say Ana Bekoach at a time of aliyah, like at night before our neshama goes up to Hashem when we go to sleep. Now, at the end of the week, when the Avodah of the week becomes elevated, we say Ana Bekoach as well.

Now that we have mentioned each of the six days of the week, we say Lecha Dodi. This, and the rest of Kabolas Shabbos, is to honor the holy day of Shabbos!

HALACHOS HATZRICHOS

Ahavas Yisroel

When we praise another person, it is good for him and good for us! It is good for him because now he will want to do more special things. It is also good for us, because Hashem has nachas to hear us talking this way, and will want to give us more brachos!

There are halachos that help us make sure that the words we say only help the person we are talking about!

One halacha is that we should be careful about praising someone about how he was such a great host. We don’t want other people to hear and all start going to be his guest, until he has nothing left!

GEULAH U'MOSHIACH

Shining a Light to the World #2

The Navi Yeshaya told us about the Geulah, that “Vehalchu Goyim Le’orech” — the goyim will follow in the light of the Yidden.

The light we are talking about here is the light of Hashem!

But didn’t we learn that Hashem’s light has to be hidden in the world, because otherwise the world won’t be able to exist?

In Tanya, the Alter Rebbe tells us that when Moshiach comes, we won’t need tzimtzum anymore! The koach of Torah will help us handle Hashem’s light in the world!

Through the Yidden, the goyim will also be able to feel some of the Elokus in the world — Vehalchu Goyim Le’orech.

We also had this at the time of Matan Torah, when the whole world was changed because of Hashem being revealed to the Yidden. This is the way it will be in the time of the Geulah, for the entire world!
