Yay — Sarge’s Dog Walk is Aug. 3!

Mark your calendars. Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation’s 14th Annual Downtown Dog Walk is Saturday, Aug. 3, along Main Street in Waynesville. The fundraiser supports the homeless dogs and cats of Haywood County — and is a much-loved community event.
The start time is at 9 a.m. Aug. 3, to try to beat the heat.
“This event is not only a fun time for all — it gives the community an opportunity to be a part of helping with the animals’ medical costs, supplies, food, boarding and fostering,” said Felisha Wyman, Sarge’s board member and Dog Walk co-chair. “Join us in celebrating the 10,000 animals Sarge’s has saved during its 13-year history.”
“Sarge’s Annual Dog Walk is a great opportunity for us all to celebrate our canine friends,” said Fred Strohm, Sarge’s administrator. “It’s a wonderful thing to see so many people both passionate about the cause and enjoying the company of dogs.”

Register now

Participants may register online at www.sargeanimals.org or pick up a form at Sarge’s Adoption Center, The Dog House or Smoky Mountain Dog Bakery, all in Waynesville. Day-of-event registration is available, too, at 8 a.m. Aug. 3, on the courthouse lawn.
The walk begins and ends at the Historic Haywood County Courthouse on Waynesville’s Main Street. After the walk, there will be contests, with guest judges 99.9 KISS Country personalities Eddie Foxx and Sharon Green. See dogs compete in dog/owner look-a-like, best-dressed dog, best dog trick and best tail-wagging dog.
Attendees will want to visit the pet-related vendor tables before and after the walk.

Ways to help Sarge’s work

This year, Sarge’s is offering a simplified pricing structure. For $30 per person, attendees receive admission to the Dog Walk, admission for as many dogs as you want to walk, one T-shirt, a goodie bag provided by sponsors, and an event bandanna for your pup.
The official 2019 Downtown Dog Walk T-shirt will be available for $15 for adults and $10 for children. The T-shirts will also be on sale at pre-registration and at the Dog Walk.
“If you can’t join us that day, or don’t have a dog to walk, you can still help,” Felisha said. “Sign up to be a virtual walker. Sponsor a Sarge’s foster dog for $15 and a volunteer will walk a foster dog for you. What a treat for a foster dog to be able to join the fun.”

T-shirt deadline is July 1

Remember that July 1 is deadline to have sponsor names printed on the commemorative T-shirts. More than 400 shirts will be distributed and the shirts become collector’s items.
“Sponsorships are crucial to the success of the Dog Walk,” said Felisha. “Please help us continue this important mission in our community and join us for this fun event.”
To register to walk or for a sponsorship form, visit www.sargeanimals.org, call 828-246-9050 or visit Sarge’s Adoption Center.

Youth for Sarge’s Kickoff is July 13

Just in time for summer, Sarge’s is kick-starting the Youth for Sarge’s program Saturday, July 13, from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., at the Haywood County Animal Shelter, 453 Jones Cove Rd., Clyde.
The Kickoff is designed just for kids, and will help them find their way into safe volunteer work with Sarge’s and the Haywood County Animal Shelter. Open to kids of all ages, this event will provide hands-on opportunities to make enrichment toys for the animals, and to meet our hard working volunteers who will be guiding them through the process.

Sarge’s has a YouTube Channel

Did you know that Sarge’s has started a YouTube channel? Nancy Bulluck, Sarge’s founder, medical assistant and social media manager, and Windy McKinney, volunteer coordinator, created the channel for your viewing pleasure.
“Check it out — and please subscribe,” said Nancy. “You’ll see fun videos of Sarge’s wonderful animals.”

The staff loves to see your creativity in the caption contests — so, play along. Here’s a caption winner for your amusement, by Michele Rockow.

Volunteer needs

Can you help the cause by volunteering? There are many areas where the Sarge’s staff can use your help.
• Fosters
Fostering is important in so many ways. Animals in foster care give staff and volunteers more time with the animals in the shelter, and makes more space for needy animals.
“Fostering also means that the fostered animals get some much-needed one on one time, which reduces stress, and teaches them real-life skills for living in a home,” said Sarge’s volunteer coordinator Windy McKinney.
Sarge’s is grateful to all fosters — like Kelli, Julie, and Karen, who have been life-savers. You may know Kelli for her expert care of kittens.
Fosters are in desperate need for puppies, kittens and other adult animals. If you want a refresher on bottle feeding or basic care of little ones, Windy can arrange a tutorial for you.
• Give a shelter animal a break
Sarge’s “doggie date” program is in full swing, with volunteers giving an animal a much-needed break from the shelter and some one-on-one attention.
“We’ve had several volunteers take long-term dogs out for a morning, afternoon, or a whole day and the results have been fantastic,” Windy said.
This provides a great opportunity to market them to other people, either in person or with photos taken of them relaxing and having fun.
“We also get the opportunity to learn so much about how our dogs behave outside of the shelter environment,” Windy said. “If you have taken the full series of dog classes (dog body language, dog handling, and dog adventure), and would like to give a dog some time in your world, please contact me, or discuss it with staff on site.”
• Cat enrichment
Sarge’s is looking for volunteers interested in helping with cat enrichment.
“Both Sarge’s and the HCAS are stuffed with kitties right now, so the more love we can dole out for them, the better,” Windy said. “If you can spare a half hour or more and would like to give the cats some much-needed attention, please do.”
If you haven’t done this before, please see Sharon at HCAS on Tuesdays or Thursdays, or Cameron at Sarge’s on Wednesdays and Fridays 3 – 5 p.m. for some expert advice.
• Learn more about pets
Sarge’s staff holds regular classes on animal behavior, both for dogs and cats. Leading classes are Caitlin Morrow, Sarge’s Animal Behavior Coordinator; Sharon Bolden, Sarge’s cat expert; and Windy on animal enrichment. Find the classes, training, and volunteer sessions are on Sarge’s website, under “events.”

Infirmary News

In infirmary news this month, is new pup, Chunk, who was taken to Haywood Emergency Animal Clinic (Junaluska) with a rectal prolapse.
Sarge’s was able to pay for his treatment thanks to the WuzBug Fund for Special Needs, and now he is doing well at the Adoption Center.
“Chunk is a four-month old Pit Bull Terrier, and wow, does he ever have a big personality,” Nancy Bulluck said. “He’ll be ready for adoption as soon as he gets neutered in the next couple of weeks.”
Here’s a link to Chunk’s video on Sarge’s new YouTube channel:  https://youtu.be/IbPNopBo078.
Thankfully, the WuzBug Fund for Special Needs Animals was able to pay for the medical care and surgery needed, but now funds need to be replenished for the next case that will surely come along.
Please be an angel and donate to the fund, so that Sarge’s can take care of the next special-needs animal that comes along.

Recipe of the Month — ‘Egg-ceeding Expectations’

Here’s a Kong / Pupsicle recipe:
Ingredients:
- dog food (from Sarge’s)
- 1 scrambled egg
- 1 cup boiled white rice
What to do with the Recipe:
After cooking the egg and white rice, mash them together in a bowl.  Add in dog food to the mash and stir it all together. Use the mixture to fill Kongs or cups.

Product needs:

Sarge’s kennel staff is asking for Nylabones of all sizes, but especially the big ones for big, strong chewers.
In addition, with all the puppies in Sarge’s care, the staff requests pee pads — and of course, Nature’s Miracle, so the kennel staff can keep the Adoption Center clean and smelling wonderful.
