This week, I had the pleasure of hosting a reception to mark the retirement of Gwent Police Chief Constable Julian Williams, who formally steps down on Sunday 30 June.

Julian has been a very effective leader and has demonstrated his clear commitment to protecting the most vulnerable in our communities. His decision to create a special unit to help eradicate human trafficking and modern slavery is an excellent example of this.

I am sure there will be many opportunities for him to contribute to Welsh public life going forward and I wish him all the best for the future.

We are currently interviewing for his replacement and I will feed back on this process in due course.

Caerphilly Armed Forces Day

My team attended Caerphilly’s Armed Forces Day in Waunfawr Park last weekend and I was honoured to lay a wreath at a special remembrance service held on Sunday.

This is an annual event, but one that had particular significance this year, as we marked the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

Many brave soldiers from Gwent landed on the beaches of Normandy all those years ago, many never to return, and it is important that we never forget their sacrifice.

New film tackles `County Lines’ gang exploitation and violence

Fearless.org, the youth service of the charity Crimestoppers, has launched a new film in Wales to raise awareness of how ‘County Lines’ drug gangs exploit young people to move and sell drugs.

‘County Lines’ is the name given to drug networks operated by criminal gangs outside of their home cities and towns.

The film - ‘Running the Lines’ - is inspired by accounts of real-life County Lines cases, including the use of violence by such gangs.

It will be used to start conversations with young people across Gwent and deliver key messages and information at a crucial time in their development.

Meeting with Director General of the Crime Police and Fire Group

This week I met with Scott McPherson, the Director General of the Crime Police and Fire Group.

It was a productive meeting where we discussed both UK and Welsh policing initiatives, the Policing Partnership Board for Wales, the apprenticeship levy and spending review amongst other issues.

I would like to thank him for coming to Gwent and look forward to working more closely with his office in the future.
Gwent Police vehicles to promote the anti-slavery symbol for Wales

I am pleased to see that Gwent Police vehicles will now display Dewi the Dragon, the anti-slavery symbol for Wales.

I represent the four Police and Crime Commissioners in Wales on the Welsh Government Leadership Group that is focussed on tackling modern day slavery and anything that can raise awareness of this appalling crime is to be welcomed.

Report any signs of modern day slavery by calling 999 in an emergency, or 101 for non-emergencies. Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, anonymously. For more information you can all the Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700 or visit wales.gov.uk/anti-slavery
