2019 HFIR and SNS User Meeting Highlights

With the theme of “Neutron Sciences: Past, Present, and Future,” the 2019 Neutron Scattering User Meeting, held June 4–5 at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), saw record attendance by more than 250 members of the global neutron research community. The event featured presentations on the latest neutron research techniques and accomplishments by staff and users at ORNL.

Opening remarks were delivered by Harriet Kung, DOE’s associate director of Basic Energy Sciences (BES). Kung highlighted DOE/BES program priorities and potential new funding opportunities for FY 2020, emphasizing selected areas of science. Activities included a town hall meeting, proposal planning session, facilities tour, discussion groups, poster sessions, an early career panel, an awards ceremony, and plenary sessions ranging from keynote addresses to panel discussions. Workshops and tutorials on neutron scattering were held the day before and after the meeting.

ORNL’s next Neutron Scattering User Meeting is currently planned for 2021.

Proposal call allocation for the upcoming cycle

Proposals for beam time at the SNS closed March 27, 2019. SNS received a total of 659 instrument beam time requests in 622 proposals. Of those, 165 proposals received beam time at SNS. Another 136 total proposals were placed in alternate status with the potential to be approved if scheduling allows.

The next proposal call will close September 18, 2019.

The User Channel: Liquids Reflectometer Data Workflow Tutorial

The Liquids Reflectometer Data Workflow tutorial is now available on the SNS-HFIR User Channel. This 30-minute tutorial covers how data are acquired, reduced, and analyzed at the Liquids Reflectometer.

Watch it before your next Liquids Reflectometer experiment at https://vimeo.com/331233885.

Tennessee law bans handheld cell phone use while driving starting July 1

Beginning July 1, 2019, drivers can be fined up to $200 for holding a cell phone while driving on Tennessee roads. This includes talking or texting while actively driving down a road or sitting at a stop light. ORNL observes all state and federal laws, and this law can be enforced on the ORNL campus. Please do not use your cell phone while driving on the ORNL campus or use a hands-free device in your vehicle.

After-hours food and beverages at SNS

The SNS cafeteria is now equipped to offer after-hours food and beverages. The location now offers full meals with an entrée and two sides, a variety of grab-and-go sandwiches, soups, desserts and beverages. There is a "parlevel" kiosk set up to accept payments made with credit and debit cards. It does not accept cash payments. Simply scan your items and follow the instructions on the screen.

CVs required for ORNL site access

A CV (curriculum vitae) is now required for any foreign national (non-US citizen) requesting site access to ORNL. The CV must include all work positions with no gaps in time, the names and dates of all academic institutions attended, and all science and technology specialties. The time period must cover from high school graduation to the current date.  If you have any questions or concerns, please email the SNS/HFIR User Office at hfirsnsusers@ornl.gov

Upcoming Events

WAND2 Workshop — Complementarity and synergy effects with the JRR3 Instrument Suite, July 14
This workshop will be held on July 14 before the joint US-Japan Steering Committee meeting July 15–16, 2019, at ORNL. It will provide a venue for scientists from JAEA, ISSP, and ORNL to meet; discuss the latest developments in instrumentation; and look at areas where WAND² is complementary to the Japanese neutron scattering instrument suite, and where synergistic effects for increased collaboration can be found. The workshop features participants from JAEA, ISSP, and ORNL, and all interested scientists are invited. Register by July 13. Read More >
2019 Workshop on Polarized Sources, Targets, and Polarimetry, September 22
The Workshop on Polarized Sources, Targets, and Polarimetry (PSTP) has been a tradition for more than 20 years, moving between Europe, the US, and Asia. The 18th International workshop, PSTP 2019, will take place in Knoxville, Tennessee. It will address technical challenges and accomplishments related to polarized gas/solid targets, polarized electron/positron/ion/neutron sources, polarimetry, and applications of polarized techniques. The deadline for submitting abstracts is July 27. Read More >
77th Annual Pittsburgh Diffraction Conference October 25–26
The 77th Annual Pittsburgh Diffraction Conference will be held at SNS October 25–26, 2019. The conference will feature sessions focused on all areas of diffraction, from powders to protein crystals. Topics will include neutron, s-ray, and electron diffraction; total scattering; magnetic scattering; and small-angle scattering. The registration fee for the conference is $100, which includes lunch on October 25 and 26 and dinner on October 25. Abstract submission is free. Registration closes September 20, 2019.
