On 4 July, we will be running a Science Fair, Winter Festival, Market Day AND now a Science Show.  Thanks to the YMCA for the use of the gymnasium on 4 July, and thanks to generous funding from friends of the group, the show will be free and open to everyone to enjoy.  It starts at 12:30pm, for all ages and stages :)

The show is brought to us by Tornado Tammy - mad scientist specialising in awesome shows  :)

Fundamental scientific concepts such as gravity, the nature of air (gases), why bubbles are always round, how light bends to create rainbows, and more are explored.  This show also touches on the concept of condensation and cloud formation, changes in the Material World that will give children a new understanding of the world around them.  Most importantly, the Brilliant Bubbles show introduces children to the Nature of Science as a way of looking at the world, and of asking questions in order to better understand our world.  It also presents science as something fun; and scientists as relatable, fun people in a wonderful, 45 minute long show.

ALL HOMESCHOOLING FAMILIES WELCOME.

TERM 2 FAMILIES - NO NEED TO PAY UNTIL WEEK BEGINNING 29 JULY.
Slight change to our term 3 dates.  Still starting 1 August, but finishing on 12 August.  This is due to a pre-booking for a gymnastics competition in the YMCA Gymnasium Stadium for 19 September.  Tech Fair will still be held on 26 September.
In term 3 our Visual Art tutor, Antonia, will be taking a break to complete a PhD, which is awesome!  I asked Antonia to write a summary of what her PhD is about.

"I am currently undertaking my first year of a practice-led Doctor of Philosophy at AUT University in Auckland City. The focus of my PhD is on concepts of care, labour and responsibility through a visual arts lens. My research question asks: What is the significance of undertaking accumulative practices of care through a politically, socially and ecologically orientated art practice? My own art practice is lens based, and involves video-based installation. It negotiates things like the difference in value between physical labour and emotional labour, and how these labours of care are gendered/feminised. The aim of this research is to generate art and critical writing that tends to social inequities and political and ecological progress, while making visible the work of people who care.

Doing a PhD within the context of visual arts means I will be engaging in my own art practice; exhibiting work and participating in shows to explore my thinking, as well as writing a 100,000 word exegesis outlining my original research and significant research findings. This will take between 3-4 years to complete."

We wish Antonia all the best for her next term's work.  Looking forward to meeting Nicky Munroe, who will be filling in for Antonia next term.
TERM 3 = 1 AUGUST to 19 SEPTEMBER

Creativity and Empowerment

In term 3 we will present 36 options for families to choose from, for all ages.  A total of 480 class spaces.  This is a response to the group's growth, and the new families looking to join us.

We are delighted to be able to provide a room in term 3, to hold empowering seminars for homeschooling parents, and those looking for support and information.

Term 2 families are invited to book classes from Monday 24 June, 10am onwards.  Open to all new families from Tuesday 25 June, 10am onwards.

You may not be able to get your first choice of classes - but hopefully there will be something for everyone in term 3.

Check out the confirmed line up on the button below.  Full class descriptions are up, so feel free to take a look.  Tutor profiles are also available below the class descriptions.  But no bookings please, until next week.

Thanks to all our tutors who make our meet ups an inspiring creative space.  Thanks to all the families who support the group and bring their co-operative energy each week.

Looking forward to a fantastic term 3!  And please feel very welcome to contact me if you have any questions.  Ph: 0272209949 or Email:  thehomeschoolgroup@gmail.com
