MAC in a Moment

June 26, 2019
Summer beckons with an opportunity to slow down, reflect, and catch up on some learning. Here are a few summer learning options to explore. Meanwhile, MAC in a Moment will pause and return in August!

Learning Moments
Summer offers a great opportunity to explore the MAC's growing library of Learning Moment videos, featuring interviews with state- and nationally-known assessment experts. Since each short (2-4-minute) video clip addresses a single assessment concept, Learning Moments are ideal for sharing in presentations, blogs, or other communications. Find all available clips in the MAC Resource Bank (filter for videos/short clips).

Here are a few new Learning Moments to enjoy over the summer, featuring International Assessment for Learning expert Dr. Jill Willis: Can't find Learning Moments on a particular topic? Contact us to ask for ideas.

Featured Curated Collection: Assessment for Learning
In April, Dr. Jill Willis traveled to Michigan from her home in Queensland, Australia to observe some local schools and share her research on assessment for learning with the MAC's Assessment Learning Network.

The phrase assessment for learning is used commonly in other countries to mean what the U.S. is coming to understand as formative assessment: a pedagogic process where teachers and students evaluate learning while the learning is occurring. Learner agency is front and center. When assessment is used to regulate one’s own thinking and understanding, assessment is being used to support and advance learning.

Summer reading, anyone?
Did you know that Michigan Department of Education now includes a regular column in their Spotlight newsletter dedicated to assessment literacy? The "Focus on Assessment Literacy" column in the June 13 issue of Spotlight included a suggested summer reading list on a variety of assessment topics. It’s a great list—check it out!

By the way, if you’re involved in state assessment and not yet a Spotlight reader, I encourage you to subscribe here. And if you enjoy reading within a professional learning community, consider taking part in our MAC Reads 2019. A live webinar with author W. James Popham will cap off the event on September 26.
