Maker Spotlight: Cynthia Farrell Johnson

Cynthia Farrell Johnson, painter and mixed-media artist, has been with Gala since its early days in Kensington. If you ask her when and why she started painting, Cynthia will tell you about her mother, a multi-talented artist who would bring a notepad to church. When Cynthia would fidget, her mother had a way for Cynthia to escape into a world of imagination. Cynthia loved it! She also had the good fortune of having a teacher in New York, where she grew up, who would give her leftover paint and encouraged her creative journey. They are still in touch!
 
At Gala, we feature Cynthia's unique cards. They showcase artwork inspired by the world around us. Cynthia's art reflects her extensive travels and the discoveries made in cultures around the world. During her stays in Ivory Coast, Benin, Panama, Uruguay, and El Salvador, instead of snapping photos of strangers, Cynthia would quickly sketch what she saw around her. These sketches became postcards to herself, capturing the incredible variety of traditions. 

Cynthia works in gouache, acrylic, fibers... It's all about play and experimentation. Recently, she even learned how to make her own paper. The cards are blank, so you get to write your own messages to your loved ones. They are great as congratulations, birthday, baby, and holiday cards. Cynthia wishes for her artwork to add cheer to your day by celebrating the beauty of our lives -- friendships. community, and the power of human connection -- no matter where you are.
