SUMMER IS FINALLY HERE

Already we have heard stories of great trips: The Broken Group, Clayoquot, The Nuchatlitz, and our editor, Gene, is doing a west coast clean up from Fair Harbour.  We wish everyone blue skies, light winds, calm seas and safe passage wherever you are this summer.

NEXT MEETING:  Wednesday, September 4th, Beban Park, Room 2, 7 pm.  Presenter to be announced.

NEWCASTLE ISLAND:
It was a smaller but very enthusiastic group at Newcastle this past month.  The weather was good, activities were fun and food was terrific.  Thanks to everyone who came out and thanks to all participants for contributing and assisting with the organization, food prep, transportation, schlepping, and workshops.  It was a great group.

Newcastle camping has become very expensive and in order for it to make sense, financially, we have to either charge more, or to have the club subsidize a large amount.  We need a minimum of 40 people at $25 each to get close to breaking even.

We think it might be time for a change.  One possible solution might be lakeside camping somewhere, where low tides and transportation of food and equipment are not such issues.

We are looking for suggestions from the membership on what kind of event you would like to see, so please let us know your thoughts by e-mailing
board@nanaimopaddlers.org

40th ANNIVERSARY:  In delving through the archives recently, we discovered that our Club was started in September of 1980.  That means that in September of 2020 we will be 40 years old.....and......some of our current members were part of the Club at its inception in 1980.

Sounds like a good reason to have a celebration.   Once again we are looking for input from the members, so if you have an idea, send it to
board@nanaimopaddlers.org

We are also looking for members to step up and help with the organization of any future events.  It seems that the same people are doing most of the work and volunteering, and we need new ideas and new participation.

UPCOMING EVENTS:  Most of you will have noticed that we are currently hosting lots of shorter events: Wednesday Evening Paddles and some shorter day paddles.  Thank you to the hosts for setting these up.  We know many of you do not have time to do longer paddles so we hope these meet your needs.  Again, comments and ideas should be sent to board@nanaimo paddlers.org

HOSTS:  Can we get some of you to step up and host some longer 8 - 10 km paddles please.

If you are interested in becoming a host, and setting up your own trips for Club members, please contact Gord Allen at hosting@nanaimopaddlers.org

HERE'S SOMETHING FUN TO FOLLOW:  Just in from our member Randy Chatterjee - a race on the Yukon River, starting today, June 25th from Whitehorse to Dawson City.  You can track it all at //https://www.yukonriverquest.ca/yrq/app/entry8/tracker_results.php?race=19yrq

IN CLOSING:  We would love to hear about your trips this summer.  Many of us watch Meetup with great interest to see the super photos many of you post.  Please keep it up.  We would also love to include short precis of your trips in the newsletter, or of any humorous or interesting things that have happened on a trip.  Please forward to newsletter@nanaimopaddlers.org

FROM THE ARCHIVES:

A member by the name of Ray Roy wrote some of the first newsletters, and they were very entertaining.  They were called "The Paddlers' Post".   I know there are a few of you who knew Ray.  He was a moving force in Nanaimo in both hiking and kayak/canoeing circles.

In 2000 when he was reminiscing about the first 20 years of Nanaimo Paddlers, he wrote a history.  He finished it by saying.  'Remember, this is your Club.  Think of it like a bucket.  You are only going to get out of it what you put ito it."

See you on the water - Susie Youle - this month's editor.
