There is a dreamy quality to Vilnius. Lithuania's capital has an Old Town of rare authenticity: marvellously intact, its pebbly streets are lined with weather-worn period buildings that hide cafes, boutiques and dainty guesthouses. Though a capital city, Vilnius feels much like an overgrown village. It's carpeted with green spaces, which cover around 40% of its area, and is studded with venerable Catholic and Orthodox church spires. But this is no Eastern European antique: artists and trend setters keep Vilnius cutting-edge.
Vilnius’ Christmas markets are filled with stalls offering unique gifts along with the aroma of candied nuts, which are a big thing in Vilnius. For traditional Christmas entertainment, visit the two main Christmas markets in the city’s main squares and create your own fairy tale along the narrow-cobbled streets of the city’s UNESCO-protected Old Town.
Cathedral Square
The biggest Christmas market in Vilnius will surround the city’s Christmas Tree at Cathedral Square. Vendors here typically sell seasonal staples like herbal teas, mulled wine and pastries, but you can also pick up gifts and Lithuanian souvenirs to take home with you. There are lots of handmade items, food products like apple cheese or berry wine, handmade socks, wooden spoons and handmade gifts that will make great stocking stuffers once you’re back home
Town Hall Square
Traditionally, this market has been a welcome refuge from the crowds at Cathedral Square. Town Hall Square is lined with picturesque makeshift houses, making it great for photos. The market will follow a similar concept as the one at Cathedral Square; however, it will be a bit smaller and offer a comparatively modest selection of goods. It’s still worth a visit, though, and the variety of holiday gifts and local food won’t disappoint.
Stikliai Street
This small street is a goldmine for local interior design, clothing, and accessory boutiques. Stores by emerging talents, vintage shops, and linen boutiques unexpectedly appear around the corner.
The 4-star Congress Avenue is centrally located on Vilnius’ main street, Gedimino Avenue, only a few steps from the National Theatre and Government Palace. It is also perfectly situated for the Christmas markets.
All air-conditioned rooms of Congress Avenue offer an LCD TV with satellite and cable channels, as well as a bathroom complete with a hairdryer and either a bath or a shower.
There is a terrace on the top floor of the hotel, where guests can enjoy views of the city. Free wifi is also available.
The Cathedral of Vilnius is a 5-minute walk away. All main shops as well as the finest bars and restaurants are located in the immediate proximity of Congress Avenue.
