The team at Performance Podiatry and Physiotherapy present a June update!
It's been a busy month at the clinic with all the guys run off their feet! With the end of financial year coming, many health insurance policies will be renewing soon so it may be the best time to book in an appointment for that pain or niggle you have been nursing! Just call the above number to book an appointment.

April Edition: ITB Syndrome
What is ITB syndrome?
ITB syndrome is a painful condition that affects the outside of the knee- where the ITB or iliotibial band rubs against the thigh bone (femur).

Who gets ITB syndrome
Anyone can get ITB syndrome but it is by far most prevalent in runners or those trying to take up running.

Causes of ITB syndrome
There a lot of different factors that can cause ITB syndrome but mostly its something to do with your running. Fundamentally it is an overuse injury. Either you have trained too hard too quickly or there is an issue in regards to your running mechanics that needs to be considered (muscle control/footwear/running technique)

Treatment of ITB syndrome
Make sure you get yourself assessed by our physiotherapist to assess what is causing YOUR condition and symptoms. Chris will take a detailed history of the onset of your pain and gain an idea of what needs to be done to get you better.

Treatments may then include:

  • Exercises to improve strength, endurance, flexibility and co-ordination (you cant go wrong getting strong!)
  • Soft/deep tissue massage of the affected muscle groups
  • Advice on running cadence and technique
  • Advice on how to phase back to running and if any alterations are required to your current programme
  •  Taping
  • Adjunct treatments such as dry needling
  • Referral to a podiatrist if appropriate for footwear advice

A big thanks to Chris Meehan for his update this week on the role of footwear on knee osteoarthritis- an interesting discussion on the effects of shoe structure on pain and degeneration on xray! Important to remeber though the best outcomes  remain activity alteration, lifestyle change and exercise!
