CYCLING NEW ZEALAND SCHOOLS
RECOGNITION AWARDS
The Cycling New Zealand Schools Recognition Awards were presented at the Cycling New Zealand Annual Conference Weekend in Cambridge last month.

Paul Leitch, from Baradene College was presented with the Coach of the Year Award, Rick Faulding from Saint Kentigern College and Murray Andersen from Canterbury Schools Mountain Biking were presented with the Outstanding Contribution to Schools Cycling Award.

We'd love to say a massive thank you to Paul, Rick, Murray and all of the coaches, managers, teachers, parents, administrators and other helpers that were nominated for these awards. The time, effort and passion that you put into Schools Cycling is appreciated by us all!
Paul has led the Baradene College cycling squad from a small team of 8-10 riders through to the largest school cycle team of over 60 riders. Paul’s approach is about creating opportunities for his riders and supporting them in making sound decisions. All Baradene’s riders have a great amount of respect for him and thoroughly enjoy the coaching they receive.
In Rick's time at Saint Kentigern College, he has coached and mentored many cyclists to Auckland and National titles and has been the Premier Boys Team Time Trial coach for over 5 years. His commitment and passion to cycling is second to none and he is admired and respected both in and out of Saint Kentigern College.
Murray’s contribution has been in the redevelopment of schools’ mountain biking in the Canterbury region. The race series he organizes provides a competition platform for riders to get valuable race experience.
"Murray’s aim has always been to foster children’s love of mountain biking as a sport and he is so encouraging of them.”

KNOW YOUR SPORT
With the South and North Island School Road Champs happening next week we'd thought we would talk about Team Time Trials and how they work!

The Team Time Trial combines preparation, skill, speed, and tactics in a race against the clock.  Each team consists of 5 (senior grades) or 4 (all other grades) riders starting from a held start (standing – ouch, feel the burn!) at 1 or 2 minute intervals.  The clock is stopped when the 4th (senior grades) or 3rd (all other grades) crosses the finish line.

During the race, riders will typically ride in a tight pace line, taking turns to lead the team before rotating to the back of the line.   As you can imagine, tactics and communication are vital to utilise the strengths and weaknesses of the team in the best possible way .
