Week 9

Hello Urbanists! This week's newsletter features an exciting announcement on our work at the Oxford Urbanists, as well as a glut of information on conferences taking place worldwide this year and next. As you start to wind down in Week 9, take some time to peruse the opportunities, events, and articles in this especially voluminous newsletter edition.  First, check out our new Oxford Urbanists Monthly section of our website.

Read on for news on what Paschal mysteries have to do with contemporary urban planning, opportunities to attend conferences and summer schools, events happening from Oxford to Singaporeand much much more.

Oxford Urbanists Monthly
We are pleased to announce the birth of our latest project, 'Oxford Urbanists Monthly'. Our regional teams across the urban world, from Latin America to South Asia, will be furnishing this space with short comments on the state of affairs in their region. Every month, their comments will be based on a selection of topics inspired by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
We have enabled comments on these, so please get commenting and let's start a discussion!
OU June’s regional monthly topic enters the global debate on the importance of mainstreaming Urban Informality analysis as part of urban planning and decision-making.

As always, please do send in your pictures and work -  we'd love to feature them in our newsletter. Head over to Facebook, Twitter, and our website pages for more updates.

2. Urbanist News around the World

  • Cities are hiring a new kind of CEO (Governing)
    • Chicago's new mayor is the latest to carve out a position for a chief equity officer who focuses on racial and economic diversity and discrimination.
  • Smarter is Greener: How Artificial Intelligence Is Shaping Urban Climate Action (New Cities)
    • A collection of articles on AI and cities which make for a far more uplifting experience than that noughties Spielberg film, AI, which had me weeping for days. Do not watch.
  • These are the world's best cities to be a cyclist (World Economic Forum)
    • Finally, the day has come when we are able to share a 'best cities' article which does not focus solely on the USA.
  • On Paschal Mysteries, Primates and Conflagration: Notre Dame and the Ecological Disenfranchisement of Western Civilization  (Nature of Cities)
    • A reflection on the inescapable dependence of cities on materials, and therefore on 'nature'
  • My Quixotic Quest for Quiet in New York City (City Lab)
    • Much more interesting than its unwritten sequel, My Soul-destroying Search for Silence in Oxford's Streets and Libraries Alike. Maybe noiselessness is overrated and puritanical, anyway.
