Capitol News Illinois is a project of the Illinois Press Foundation that launched in early 2019 to increase coverage of state politics in Illinois. Three full-time staff reporters produce state government stories that are distributed to local and weekly newspapers across the state.
Food Bank News launched in January 2019 to cover hunger in the U.S., food banks and related organizations.
Idaho Education News is an award-winning news site covering education in Idaho.
Key Peninsula News is a local news site covering a small rural community in Vaughn, Wash.
Mississippi Center for Investigative Reporting is a new investigative news organization in Mississippi, founded by journalist Jerry Mitchell.
Apply to Participate in NewsMatch 2019
NewsMatch 2019, a national matching-gift campaign to grow fundraising capacity in nonprofit newsrooms and promote giving to journalism among U.S. donors, is now accepting applications. Nonprofit news organizations that are active members of the Institute for Nonprofit News are eligible to participate in this year’s campaign, which will run from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31. NewsMatch has helped raise more than $14 million for nonprofit newsrooms since 2016.
Important deadlines to participate in NewsMatch 19:
> Application for INN Membership (Deadline: July 1 to be eligible for NewsMatch)
> Application for NewsMatch 2019 (Deadline: Aug. 1)
INN Labs Tech Support for NewsMatch 2019 Participants
Thanks to generous funding from the Knight Foundation, INN Labs is providing services to help participants improve their website donation flows, add important NewsMatch messaging and media to their sites, and learn how to use existing tools to optimize campaigns. Business Journalism Grants Available
Applications are now being accepted to the Summer 2019 McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism, an initiative of the Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY that supports high-impact economic and business journalism. The McGraw Fellowships provide up to $15,000 and editorial support for experienced journalists to produce deeply-reported investigative or enterprise stories on important economic, financial or business topics. Summer 2019 applications are due June 28, 2019.
Free Trust Classes
Trusting News is now offering free trust classes for journalists thanks to funding from Democracy Fund. The online class, which lasts five weeks, is meant for journalists to build more trust with their communities. Participants will learn techniques to combat misassumptions and respond to criticism, create a personalized action plan to better communicate the mission of their organization to readers, and gain a better understanding as to what leads to mistrust. Learn more and apply by July 15.
New Audience Course from the Knight Center
The Knight Center is adding a new four-week audience development course, taught by Amanda Zamora, chief audience officer for The Texas Tribune, which will run from July 15 to Aug. 11, 2019.
“Knowing your audience: strategies for increasing the reach and engagement of your journalism” will help newsrooms understand who their readers and viewers are, how to keep them coming back and how to attract even more eyes. For more information, visit the course page. There is a small $95 fee and the course is capped at 500 students.
LEDE Fellowship Now Available
The LEDE Fellowship from the Solutions Journalism Network is an opportunity for entrepreneurs interested in or already leading solutions journalism projects to connect and learn from each other. The fellowship is also an opportunity to accelerate the spread of solutions journalism, creating both local impact and seeding national conversations. Learn more and apply by July 21.

Awards - Congratulations:
- Reveal’s animated video, The Office of Missing Children, won a national Edward R. Murrow Award in the feature reporting category. The video was based on Aura Bogado’s reporting, produced by Michael Schiller, and illustrated by Brian Britigan.
- Oklahoma Watch received 14 awards, including six first-place honors, in the Oklahoma Society of Professional Journalists competition for work published in 2018.
- The Utah Headliners Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists awarded The Utah Investigative Journalism Project several prizes for 2018 reporting, including the state’s top investigative reporting prize.
- Voice of OC earned a record 14 wins at the recent Orange County Press Club awards dinner, including five, first place wins in the newspaper contest’s top categories such as Best Column, Investigations, Music Reviews, Infographics and Feature Writing. Publisher Norberto Santana, Jr., an INN board member, was also honored for the third year in a row with the David McQuay Award for Best Columnist.
