CANADIAN NEWS/NOUVELLES CANADIENNES:

Saskatchewan Man Shares Safety Lessons After Near-Fatal Electrocution – cjme.com (SK), June 21, 2019:  Curtis Weber doesn’t want anyone to make the same mistake he did. He spoke at Canada’s Farm Progress Show in Regina, sharing his story of a near-fatal incident while working on a Saskatchewan farm in the summer of 1999 when he was 17. It was his third day on the job working as a labourer as he and his co-workers were attempting to move a steel hopper under an overhead power line with a crane. They planned to be home early on the Friday of the Canada Day long weekend but were running behind after the previous job took longer than expected. “That’s when complacency started to set in and we started rushing even more and we started to pick up the pace because of the hours that we lost,” Weber recalled.

4th Annual Farm Safety Returns to Lacombe County – lacombeexpress.com (AB), June 21, 2019:  The fourth annual Farm Safety Day returned to the Lacombe County office — bringing in 300 Grade 5 students from across the region. “This year we are having our fourth annual Farm Safety Day, where we have 300 Grade 5 students come in to learn about multiple different topics on farm safety,” Jalene Makus, event coordinator, said. “This is for kids that live on the farm and for kids who live in the city, who may not know about farm life as much.” The event has grown both in scope and numbers since it’s inception.

VR Safety Training Showcased at Farm Progress Show – cjme.com (SK), June 20, 2019:  Virtual reality has arrived at the Farm Progress Show to better teach workplace safety. Hazard ID VR is a program developed by White Rabbit VR. The program is meant as a training tool for labourers to better spot dangerous situations and how to react to them. Lyle Hewitt, director of business development with White Rabbit VR, said that although the virtual reality program is not meant for the agriculture industry, it can still help farmers. “If you’re constructing a building on your farm, whether that’s a house, a barn or some other facility, this will help you to train yourself to identify hazards and work more safely,” Hewitt said. Hazard ID was developed six months ago and has partnered with the Saskatchewan Construction Safety Association for their safety training.

Choose Proper Footwear for a Safe Farm – (CASA article) grainews.ca (The Prairies), June 20, 2019:  On the farm, many everyday tasks could result in injuries to feet or ankles if the proper footwear is not used. Footwear is a key aspect of injury prevention, which is why it’s important to wear the right type to ensure your safety. Make sure you’re using footwear that meets specific safety standards by always selecting CSA-approved footwear, which can be identified by a green triangle (usually found on the right foot). When it comes to tasks that involve heavy lifting, safety footwear with a steel or composite toe should be worn any time there’s a chance of your foot being struck by or pinched between objects. And in situations where your foot could be injured by an object falling on top of it, use safety footwear with metatarsal guards on the tongue.

Agreement Needed on Quad Bike Safety, Says Widow – nzherald.co.nz (New Zealand), June 20, 2019:  Disagreements between farming and industry leaders are getting in the way of quad bike safety improvements, says farm safety advocate Julie Dee. The Waimate woman became a promoter of farm safety after her husband, Paul, sustained fatal crush injuries in a side-by-side ATV buggy roll more than two years ago. She is concerned that farmers are getting mixed messages on whether to have crush protection devices on quad bikes. WorkSafe announced on June 5 it "strongly recommends the use of crush protection devices (CPDs) on the back of quad bikes." It stated the devices could provide a survivable space should a rider be pinned under a rolled bike.

Young: Increase Awareness of Potential Hazards – (Editorial) agrinews-pubs.com (US), June 19, 2019:  In recent weeks, there has been a growing — and needed — discussion about the emotional health of farmers during this very challenging time in agriculture. Sadly, I pen this column today having just learned of a suicide death of a farmer in Minnesota. There also have been several farm accidents in recent weeks, many of which resulted in one or more deaths. Just last week, a 17-year old a couple of counties over from where I live died in a crash with a gravel truck. Apparently unaware of the truck, the young man swerved to the middle of the roadway to maneuver his farm implement past a culvert at the same time the gravel truck was overtaking the tractor. When you are running fast and furious against a clock to get the task at hand done before a certain calendar date or the next rain moves in, safety is not always top of mind. Staying alert, getting rest and staying hydrated are more important than most people realize.

Potentially Deadly Valley Fever is Hitting California Farmworkers Hard, Worrying Researchers – nbcnews.com (US), June 17, 2019:  Victor Gutierrez contracted valley fever, an illness caused by a soil-borne fungus, and he thinks he got it in the summer of 2011 when he worked in the nectarine orchards of California's dry, dusty Central Valley. "The wind was really strong, and we were almost falling off our ladders," Gutierrez said. "The dust would rise up in the fields and we would get lost in [it]." Then again, he might have contracted it during that year's grape harvest. "We would walk out of the vineyard with our faces full of dirt. Only our eyes were visible," Gutierrez said. When he showered at night, he could see the layer of soil washing off his body.
