Drug development is more than this, however. It’s also developing the delivery mechanisms so that drugs can get to where they need to be, while staying away from where they don’t. It’s discovering that old drugs, which are known to be effective for one disease, may also have immense benefits for another condition. It’s making basic science discoveries that bear pharmaceutical fruit forty years later. It’s combining two different drugs in novel ways. And it’s creating the institutions and platforms that enable researchers to collaborate, patent, test, and commercialize.
Across the System, our people and institutions are doing extraordinary work to develop and deliver the drugs that are saving and improving the lives of Texans. This is our most comprehensive issue of Texas Health Journal issue, but it’s only a small sample of that work.
Sincerely,
David Lakey, MD
