2019 APSIA 
Career Networking Reception

What can you do as an APSIA student? On June 11, nearly 300 students, alumni, employers, and staff gathered at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. for the third annual APSIA Career Networking Reception. 


Alumni and students from across thirteen APSIA schools were able to connect with representatives of organizations in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Participating employers included Albright Stonebridge Group, Brookings, Congressional Research Service, Palantir, the US Treasury Department, and more.

Attendees had the opportunity to focus their interactions across six areas: consulting, development, education, energy and the environment, health, and security.

2019 UN Young Professionals Programme
On June 10, APSIA students, alumni, and staff were invited to join Julie Weintraub and Yaxi Deng of the UN Human Resources team for a presentation on the 2019 United Nations' Young Professionals Programme (YPP)

YPP is a recruitment initiative for young, motivated professionals who want to start a career with the United Nations Secretariat. In 2019, there are 60 participating countries and online exams will be administered for the following areas: Economic Affairs; Information Systems & Technology.

 
The 2019 YPP application period will close on July 21, 2019.

Alumna Highlight: Maria Escorcia

Maria Escorcia is the Vice President, Relationship Manager, for Global Philanthropy, J.P. Morgan Chase & Company in Southeast Florida. She earned her Master's Degree in International Development from the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA).

At Global Philanthropy, she manages the firm’s philanthropy portfolio for Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Before joining J.P. Morgan Chase, she previously worked for Ashoka, an organization dedicated to supporting social entrepreneurs around the world. She has also worked for Cementos Argos, a large Colombian multinational corporation, where she designed and implemented a project that aimed to eradicate child labor in rural mining areas. 

Escorcia received a full merit scholarship from the Center for Latin American Studies, while at GSPIA. She also participated in the United Nations Headquarters Internship Program in New York City, where she worked in the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. She was one of the recipients of GSPIA's Four Under 40 Award in 2016.

Founded in 1957, the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public & International Affairs (GSPIA) is one of the largest and most comprehensive schools of its type in the United States. It offers an exceptional breadth of academic programs, covering topics as diverse as international security and nonprofit management. Uniquely, it allows students to pursue both a major and a minor at the graduate level, making it possible to study a wide variety of fields and subfields in international affairs, international development, and public administration.

GSPIA is home to some of the leading research centers in its field, including the Matthew Ridgway Center for International Security Studies, the Ford Institute for Human Security, the Center for Disaster Management, the Johnson Institute for Responsible Leadership and the Center for Metropolitan Studies. Along with their degrees, students may also pursue certificates in the study of a major world region, including Africa, Asia, Latin America, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, and the European Union.
