Bureau of Meteorology's role in COSMIC-2


COSMIC-2, a mission of six satellites designed to improve weather forecasts and space weather monitoring, was launched yesterday, 25 June (AEST) from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. Australia's Bureau of Meteorology will be playing an important role in the mission, sending commands to the satellites as well as downlinking real-time data from their ground station in Middle Point, Northern Territory to make predictions about the Earth's weather and climate. ISI consultation closes Monday

The Australian Space Agency is seeking views on the design of the International Space Investment initiative. In particular, we would like to hear from businesses and researchers that are currently engaged, or would like to be engaged, in international space projects. Submissions close 1 July 2019.

Australia at the
United Nations

The Agency took part in Australia’s delegation at the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. After 8 years of negotiation, the Committee adopted the Guidelines for the Long-term Sustainability of Outer Space Activities. The Guidelines provide guidance on the policy and regulatory framework for space activities; safety of space operations; international cooperation, capacity-building and awareness; and scientific and technical research and development. Parkes Open Day

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing, the Parkes Observatory will be open to the public on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July. Events include opportunities to tour ‘The Dish’, drive the telescope to observe pulsars in real-time, and talks, presentations and displays - including from Adelaide-born NASA astronaut Dr. Andrew Thomas and Anthony Murfett from the Agency. The Australian Civil Space Strategy was released in April, and outlines the Government’s plan to transform and grow our space industry over 10 years. In our upcoming newsletters, we will highlight one of the seven National Civil Space Priority Areas that build on Australia’s areas of strength and address our challenges.
 

Earth Observation (EO)


Earth observation (EO) has untapped potential to grow Australia’s economy, for example, by improving agricultural monitoring, water management, and monitoring shipping routes. Through Geoscience Australia’s Digital Earth Australia (DEA) initiative, Australia is world-leading in this field. Australia will continue to focus on and develop this priority area to grow Australia’s broader economy
