FACULTY RESEARCH:
PUBLICATIONS, PRESENTATIONS, and MEDIA MENTIONS

Pankaj Aggarwal’s recent article, “No Small Matter: How Company Size Affects Consumer Expectations and Evaluations,” was published in Journal of Consumer Research and covered in several media outlets, including UTSC News, U of T News and The Guardian.
 
Shauna Brail presented at the Rethinking Cluster Conference in Padua, Italy, speaking on “Rethinking Clusters in the Platform Economy: Canada’s Digital Ride Hailing Industry.”
 
Former IMI director Hugh Gunz has an article in press, “Careers in Context,” at Human Resource Management Journal.

Sonia Kang's research on hiring bias cited in The Globe and Mail: "Are screening biases costing your company top talent?"
 
Shashi Kant’s Chinese translation of his book, Handbook of Forest Resource Economics, was just published by China Forestry Publishing House.

  • Was recently awarded a Sandra Rotman Centre for Health Sector Strategy Research Grant for the project: “The social support of health-related policies: Experimental and machine learning – based studies”
  • Published a paper in American Economic Review, "Paying for Kidneys? A Randomized Survey and Choice Experiment"
Matthew Osborne had a paper accepted in the journal Marketing Science. The working paper version is available.

Phillip Oreopoulos was quoted in a Reuters article, "Bribing your way to college? Check your math, it may not pay."

Andreas Park featured in University of Toronto Magazine, "In Machines We Trust."

Phani Radhakrishnan Stephen Scharper
  • Served as Master of Ceremonies for the five day Waterdocs Film Festival, held at the Hot Docs Cinema in Toronto
  • Published an article, “The Fabric of Faith-Based Environmentalism in Canada,” in Worldviews
  • Interviewed in a report from the Toronto Observer on the children's Friday Climate Action Strike
  • Hosted and curated the Film Festival at the annual Sources of Knowledge Forum, in Tobermory, ON
Eduardo Souza-Rodrigues Soo Min Toh Marius Zoican’s paper “How Fast Should Trades Settle?” was accepted for publication in Management Science.

FACULTY RESEARCH: GRANTS

We are pleased to announce the results of the inaugural IMI research funding competition, which provides small “seed” grants to research projects that fulfill IMI’s mandate of advancing interdisciplinary, collaborative, and impactful research projects. Laurel Besco was one of the 2019 Research & Scholarly Activity Fund recipients for her project, “Innovative Law and Policy Approaches to Mitigating GHG Emissions from Air and Maritime Transport.”
 
Shashi Kant received an NSERC Discovery grant totalling $155,000 for his project, “Spatial and Non-Spatial Timber Market Models and Game Theoretic Models of Sustainable Forest Management.”
 
Kira Lussier received a grant from the Association for Computing Machinery History Committee to fund her project, “Computing Psychology,” on human/computer interaction research in business.
 
Marius Zoican received a $20,000 Connaught New Researcher Award for work on Initial Coin Offerings and market structure.

FACULTY EVENTS, AWARDS, and APPOINTMENTS

Otto Yung received the 2019 IMI Faculty Award for his tireless contributions to Management, graduate programs, and student professional development.
 
Nico Lacetera received the 2019 IMI Research Award.
 
Former IMI Director, Associate Professor of Geography, UTM, Pierre Desrocher’s book, "Population Bombed! Exploding the Link Between Overpopulation and Climate Change" (co-written with UTM librarian Joanna Szurmak), was a runner-up for the Donner Book Prize.
 
Yuhong He's book, High Spatial Resolution Remote Sensing : Data, Analysis, and Applications, was featured in UTM's Celebration of Books event.

Rafael Chiuzi presented at TEDx UTM: Chain Reaction, speaking on Change Management.
 
Igor Lehnherr featured on UTM Research's View to the U podcast. Listen

Kira Lussier’s paper, “Of Maslow, Motives, and Managers” was selected as the best Critical Management Education Paper by the Critical Management Studies Division of the Academy of Management.

The first meeting of the new research cluster BIGDataHUB, led by MMPA Director Irene Wiecek, took place on May 15. Participants came from multiple departments across UTM, including IMI, Computer Science, Linguistics, Biology, Geography, and UTM Libraries.
