Eighth Annual Education Retreat Highlights
On June 11, 2019, leaders from across NYU Langone Health came together for the Eighth Annual Education Retreat, co-sponsored by the Office of Medical Education and Institute for Innovations in Medical Education. The event's theme was centered around educational transitions and focused primarily on the topic of data-driven coaching. More than 130 attendees representing undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education participated in this full-day event that included a workshop on faculty as coaches. Nicole M. Deiorio, MD (pictured above), professor of emergency medicine and associate dean for student affairs at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine delivered the Martin S. Nachbar Memorial Lecture. Her talk focused on the benefits of coaching in medical education and her work related to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) entrustable professional activities (EPAs).
Connecting the Dots:
Longitudinal Data-Driven Coaching to Promote Self-Reflection, Targeted Learning, and Growth
One of the main highlights of the Education Retreat was a workshop led by Linda Tewksbury, MD, MHPE (pictured left), associate dean for student affairs and Colleen Gillespie, PhD (pictured right), director of the Division of Education Quality within the Institute for Innovations in Medical Education on the topic of coaching using student performance data.
Attendees at the event worked in small groups to discuss the opportunities and challenges of a coaching model using longitudinal student assessments to drive student learning. Faculty, students, residents and staff were asked to identify patterns, discrepancies, and gaps in longitudinal student assessments and reflect from the perspective of coach, learner, and educator. Each group also discussed strategies for conducting constructive, learner-driven conversations between coach and learner that promote self-reflection, targeted learning, and growth.
Abigail Ford Winkel, MD, MHPE, vice chair for education within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology moderated a GME-focused panel discussion to highlight current initiatives to improve our understanding of how new interns perceive the transition to residency and departmental efforts to enhance GME and the clinical learning envirnoment. Panelists included Jeremy Branzetti, MD, director of the emergency medicine residency program; Patrick Cocks, MD, director of the internal medicine residency training program; Arielle Kurzweil, MD, director of the neurology residency program; and Donna Phillips, MD, assistant director of the orthopedic residency program and director of GME quality and safety.
AMA Reimagining Residency Initiative:
NYU Transition to Residency Advantage
NYU School of Medicine is one of eight projects awarded a grant through the American Medical Association's (AMA) Reimagining Residency Initiative. Building on the work of the AMA’sAccelerating Change in Medical Education Consortium, the new five-year, $15 million grant program aims to transform residency to meet the workforce needs of America’s current and future health care system.
The NYU project, Transition to Residency Advantage, led by principal investigator (PI) Marc Triola, MD (pictured above), focuses on enhancing the transition of medical students to residents by developing a cadre of skilled faculty coaches who will oversee and support learner-driven education and training goals and with whom we will work to develop enhanced assessment tools for continuous quality improvement in GME. The Institute for Innovations in Medical Education (IIME)will be collaborating with Education, Faculty, & Academic Affairs (EFAA), the Office of Medical Education (OME), Student Affairs and the Departments of Medicine, OBGYN, Emergency Medicine, Orthopedics and Pathology, as well as the Educator Community and NYSIM. Additional departments and programs will be included in the out-years.
