Back to the Bustling Bush with a Bang!
Our 2019 season has us back to the bustling bush with a bang! The start of our safari season has us once again boasting the great fortune of our incredible location, from our favourite leopards to lions and the stunning painted wolf. To our frequent visitors; the elephants, hippos, crocodiles and bush buck that our guests at Kaingo and Mwamba enjoy daily. We’ve also had some astounding sightings of herds of Cookson’s wildebeest and eland, who usually are more timid with our vehicles but seem to have started off our 2019 season with more confidence around us, much to all of our delight!
Our wildlife has welcomed us back into our little corner of paradise with great surprises; from the relief to seeing Mama Kaingo’s young male cub has survived the rain, to our first introduction to Chiphadzuwa’s beautiful young cub! We’ve been so delighted in catching up with our resident leopards and lions. Pride dynamics have changed, and there are new satellite prides of lions in our area from the Nsefu Pride. The painted wolves that cross over the territories of our two camps seem to have shifted slightly as well. All in all, we’ve all settled into the re-discovery of our incredible wildlife.
We’re also delighted to let you know our Shenton Safaris’ Family members are here waiting for your arrival with enthusiasm: our guides – the pride of our wildlife – Patrick, Sylvester, Yoram, Sandy, Hendrix and Shayne have returned this season with their incredible passion. Our excellent management team, Gerard, Catherine, Loraine and Agata are back doing what they love best in the bush. Our Kaingo and Mwamba families returned with their never-ending commitment to Shenton Safaris. We have some new members that have grown into the Shenton Safaris’ Family, and we can’t wait for you to meet them in person!
Kaingo is back in its bustling bush location, with all of our chalets perfectly perched on the Luangwa River. Pillows have been fluffed to the most extreme degree, lamp shades have been dusted, and all our new additions to the chitenge and rooms have been welcomed by the whole team. We're eager to see what our returning guests think of some little changes camp this year. We've had our usual suspects coming through the camp to check up on us and assess how we are getting on. Half Tusk, our apparent resident bull elephant, has been keeping an eye on our every movement. Additionally, our dainty spotted bushbuck have been a more informal auditor.

The main deck has become our new hosted location for our early morning breakfast, which has lent itself to many stunning sunrises with hippo and crocodile wading past. Our fresh breakfast savoury goes down a treat, to start your day with a quick warm breakfast snack apart from our usual muffins, rusks and cereals. Who can forget our divine homemade yoghurt and muesli, and our fabulous traditional nshima porridge? Our Kaingo kitchen team can do no wrong!

Well, as the crickets sing their song, and the hippos honk, with the faint bark of a leopard in the distance… we leave you with a few images of the fantastic wildlife that has graced us with their presence and welcomed us all back in the South Luangwa once more, until we can welcome you too back to your home away from home, to Kaingo, the camp of the leopard.

Mwamba has also opened it's bush doors to it's first guests earlier this month. Mwamba translates to 'heaven' in Nyanja and it appears to be a gift that continues to keep on giving. Eve and her right hand man, Paul, have been meticulously ensuring everything about Mwamba is delivering an authentic bush experience. From a shower under our fig tree to a hide just on your door step, Mwamba is well and truly heaven on earth.
New Additions to our Shenton Safaris Family!
Anna Mansfield
Anna spent her first seventeen years in neighbouring Malawi, there, she shared her father’s love for wildlife for as long as she can remember. After spending roughly six years in England at university and working in media and marketing with the likes of Red Bull, as well as one year in India working for an Indian start-up, she knew it was time to return back to Africa and begin her career in the bush. Anna is Shenton’s Media Manager and is eager to immerse herself into camp life in every way possible.
Yvonne Morgans
Yvonne had the great fortune of being brought up by avid travellers, embarking on her very first safari in Zimbabwe when she was six. She caught the safari bug at this young age and as she became older it grew into her passion; after travelling south east Asia, India, and America she settled in the UK and studied to become an emergency medical technician for the county government ambulance service. It was here that she first gained the confidence, people skills and hands on approach that is one of her greatest strengths. After a short stint in Australia, Africa called her back. Through her love of travel, culture and the great outdoors, she has remained in Africa for the last 15 years. Gaining a vast amount of knowledge and experience in many African countries though her work in the safari industry; this knowledge has enabled her to host and entertain guests from all over the world. Her other great passion apart from Africa is for peoples experiences from all walks of life.
Andrew Bwalya
Andrew started his guiding journey in 2001, both as a driving and walking level guide. With 18years of experience as a fully qualified guide and true passion for all aspects of the safari experience, from the small creatures and sights on walking safaris, to the big mammals and birds. Andrew loves the story telling aspect of safaris and sharing his knowledge both on wildlife and culturally with his guests. He brings his warmth and wisdom to our safari team!
New Photographic Vehicles
Derek and Juliet have been very busy this off season! We've been up to our usual updates for the coming season, but Derek and Jules have updated our entire fleet of game drive vehicles. Updating the arrangement of the seating to ensure they work for our photographers and avid wildlife lovers alike and adding extra comfort and space to our vehicles.

OR Tambo International Airport New Baggage Rule

The Airports Company South Africa has recently released a statement on the new rules they will be implementing for baggage travelling through OR Tambo International Airport. The new rules are aimed at preventing blockages and breakdowns caused by bags that do not have any flat surfaces or that have long straps or grips. This rule is already in place at Terminal 1 at Dubai International Airport and other airports globally.

The new baggage rules are:

1.       Only regular-shaped bags will be allowed at check-in counters;

2.       This means that the bags must have at least one flat surface to be accepted on the check-in system;

3.       Round or irregular-shaped bags will not be allowed at check-in counters; and

4.       Bags with longs straps will not be permitted at check-in counters.

Passengers trying to check in bags that do not conform to these rules will be offered the option of having their baggage wrapped with one flat side at airport approved baggage wrapping stations.http://www.airports.co.za/Documents/ORTIA%20irregular%20bags%20release.pdf
