The Lake Level Monitor

LOCSS Project Newsletter
June 2019
The Lake Observations by Citizen Scientists & Satellites project seeks to better understand how the quantity of water in lakes is changing.

New Study Lakes in Washington

From June 9-14, members of the LOCSS team travelled to the state of Washington.  While we were there we installed gauges and measured elevation in 11 new lakes!   We now are studying lakes in urban, suburban, and rural areas in a total of 7 counties. Washington is a focus area for our project and we are happy to be studying a total of 23 lakes in the state.

By the Numbers: We are monitoring 57 lakes in using 63 gauges. To date,
558 citizen scientists have submitted 2938 lake height measurements.

LOCSS In Massachusetts

On 19, staff from the City of Worcester, Massachusetts installed a LOCSS lake gauge and sign in Bell Pond, This 10 acre lake is the first LOCSS study lake in the state and will be the first of many lakes that we study in the region.

Target Monitoring Dates

Any lake height measurements that are provided are useful & help us better understand the lake.  But measurements that are taken on certain days are extra useful because we can pair them with satellite data to determine how the volume of water in the lake has changed.  To find out when these target dates occur for your lake follow the link below.

Target Dates

Happy July 4th

The LOCSS team would like to wish you a Happy 4th of July & we hope your holiday includes time on, in, or near a lake!
