A New Chapter

By Rich Wolin, Regional Vice President Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center - Northern Office

Continuous improvement is about always seeking to get better, do something better, do it with less effort or fewer resources. It is with this in mind that I announce a continuous improvement for our team at NMC Training Services. Starting July 1, 2019, our team members will become employees of the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center (MMTC). We will continue to serve you through our partnership with Northwestern Michigan College (NMC) as we have for the past 27 years to provide education, consultation and coaching to all types of organizations in northern Michigan. The result of this partnership has been documented, with tangible impacts for both organizations and individual learners in the areas of lean and continuous improvement, quality systems, leadership, team skills and many other specialized topics and customized projects.

Traverse City-area leaders announce new partnership with
Going PRO, largest effort in Michigan history to promote Professional Trades and help fill state's talent gap

MI Newswire
June 2019

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich.—State legislators and leaders in business, education and workforce development announced Monday, June 17, the Traverse City kickoff of Going PRO, a new public-private partnership that is one of the nation’s most ambitious statewide education and awareness campaigns to help employers in the Grand Traverse region and across Michigan fill an estimated 545,000 skilled-labor jobs coming open through 2026.

The Going PRO campaign, spearheaded by the Talent and Economic Development (Ted) Department of Michigan, will highlight a diverse range of high-skilled trade occupations and industries – careers Ted collectively refers to as Professional Trades. Going PRO aims to dispel the myths about Professional Trades as “dark, dirty and dangerous” and showcase numerous career options, from welders, millwrights and electrical lineworkers to medical sonographers, web developers and industrial mechanics.

Forbes
June 2019

One element of that law was the establishment of the Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) under the auspices of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the subsequent development of the MEP National Network.

Defining lean is useful, lean definitions are useless

Published on PLANET LEAN

In this article, the author reflects on how his understanding of lean thinking evolved over time – as did the way he defined it.

Starting a conversation on Twitter or LinkedIn about the definition of “lean” is a little like taking the top off a beehive. Many in the lean community fiercely defend entrenched positions around the differences between Lean, TPS and OpEx. This isn’t an article in that vein, it’s more of a personal journey of how my definition of “lean” has changed over 20 years of gemba learning.
