July Volunteer Newsletter

Volunteer Highlights

Our garden has been flourishing beautifully these past few months thanks to the help of our volunteers! We have been able to harvest squash, zucchini, tomatoes, and many other vegetables!

Program participants are able to utilize what is being grown in our garden beds. We will also be incorporating the gardens during our summer camp that starts this month!

Upcoming Events

We will be having a volunteer meeting at 11 am on Wednesday, July 10th at The Haven Administrative Office. We will be discussing different ways volunteers can support The Haven this summer.

All current volunteers are strongly encouraged to attend and should RSVP by contacting Brittany Clayborne at brittany.clayborne@havenshelter.org or (804)333-1099.

In The Community

The Haven hosted its second workshop to train members of the community to facilitate DO YOU, a program for youth that builds resilience through creative expression. This program gives the youth in our community the chance to use their voice and stand up for issues they believe in. By hosting this training workshop, The Haven hopes to have community partners implement this program within the community.

Participants included school counselors from Northumberland and Essex County, Community Services Board (CSB) staff members, a student from Rappahannock High School, and other professionals within the community.

For more information on how to facilitate DO YOU in your community, please contact Chad Lewis at (804)333-1099 or chad.lewis@havenshelter.org.

Get Involved

The Haven is in need of volunteers who are willing to assist in providing meals such as lasagna, pizza, tacos, chili, or other kid-friendly foods plus a veggie side dish for approximately 15 program participants on Monday evenings. (For example, food for 15 individuals could look like 2 large pans of lasagna and a salad.)

These meals support the women and children who attend the support groups facilitated by Haven staff. If you have additional questions or would like to support our meal program please contact Brittany Clayborne at (804)333-1099.
Our children’s programming works to meet the needs of each family at the Shelter through identified services that support them by offering programs like summer camp to offer experiences in creative and expressive arts; nature, gardening, and observational skills; STEM projects; and healthy lifestyles as well as yoga and mindfulness activities during camp in addition to the regularly held group sessions.

The Haven will offer its third summer camp for youth at our shelter this month from July 9th to July 25th. Our developmentally appropriate curricula are used during the 3-week long camp that not only promotes positive youth development and builds resilience in youth but is also therapeutic for young minds and bodies that have experienced trauma.

A total of 17 youth at our shelter participated in the Resilience-based Summer Camp program last year. By providing fun, yet content-based programming, the youth who participated have returned to school prepared to engage in learning - at a level equal to or better than when they left the previous year. This preparation is a direct result of active engagement in a hands-on learning environment while working through the healing process that their personal trauma has necessitated.

If you would like to support our Summer program, please consider donating the following items:
  • Paper Towels
  • Craft Supplies
  • Children's Magazines
  • Plasticware
  • Paper Plates/Bowls
  • Gas Cards for Field Trips
If you are interested in volunteering your time with the Summer camp, contact Brittany Clayborne at 804-333-1099.
