Relief efforts are currently being coordinated through The Hope Center of Oroville...a faith-based non-profit organization dedicated for the past 15 years to the homeless and marginalized. When the Camp Fire broke out Hope Center was asked to be a distribution hub for supplies that poured in from all over the world. Hope Center is coordinating the properties and resources of both the Paradise Church of the Nazarene and Paradise Evangelical Free Church in the various efforts.
Many residents who want to return to the Paradise Community had no insurance or are grossly under-insured. To have an option to get back into a home on their property, for many, would be a dream come true. With the two major costs of building (materials/labor) being drastically reduced by volunteerism and the supply of timber salvaged from the fire for building, it is feasible that many can be helped with the construction and placement of "Tiny Homes."
The Hope Center is the umbrella entity leading a four-pronged effort. You and/or your church can plug into any or all of these efforts. They are at varying stages of development right now:
1) A volunteer response center is being created at the Paradise Evangelical Free Church to house 50 or more volunteers at a time, with showers, bunk beds, restrooms, and kitchen.
2) The Paradise Church of the Nazarene is a major distribution point for drinking/potable water in Paradise as well as for food, clothing, household items, supplies and much more. There is a huge need for volunteers here daily.
3) Supplies arriving at Oroville Hope Center need to be inventoried, staged and loaded for delivery. We are also in constant need of warehouse volunteers who can operate a fork lift, trucks, and pallet jacks, as well as help with loading/unloading, taking inventory, and restocking.
At last count only some 3,000 of 15,000 properties have been cleared and are waiting for the OK to build. (see updates at: www.buttecountyrecovers.org). Less than 100 permits have been issued at this time.
We are developing a Team Leader Packet for your church that has all the information you will need, such as liability releases, skills assessments, what to expect... A web site is close to being finished and should be up very soon.
If your church wants to respond, we welcome skilled and unskilled volunteer labor. Please contact:
