WiLSWorld 2019--Scholarships Available
WiLSWorld 2019 is coming up on July 23rd and 24th at the Pyle Center in Madison, Wisconsin! WiLS, with the WiLSWorld Planning Team, have been busy putting together presentations and people and panels on the topics our members have shared interest in learning more about. Here are just a few of the highlights:
- Keynote speaker Rebecca Stavick, co-founder of Open Nebraska, Library Journal Mover & Shaker, and member of the Urban Libraries Council Executive Board.
- Plenary speaker, Madison Public Library - Pinney Branch's Sarah Lawton, LJ Mover & Shaker, featured speaker at last year's Library Journal’s Design Institute in Minneapolis, and member of the PLA Task Force on Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Social Justice.
- Programs on library data, web accessibility, ebook innovations, library as publisher, expanding broadband access, and so much more!
- Tuesday happy hour at Camp Trippalindee (with free snacks!)
- Wednesday morning workshops on how to get things done with process design, talking the language of user experience, and making the case for open educational resources.
- A reduced-cost Wednesday afternoon workshop on the role of libraries in advancing racial equity with plenary speaker Sarah Lawton and Gordon F. Goodwin from the Government Alliance on Race and Equity, a program of Race Forward.
In addition, you can apply for one of eight WiLSWorld scholarships of up to $350 by July 1st. Fill out this short and simple application for consideration.

Today, the American Library Association released the Libraries’ Guide to the 2020 Census, a new resource to prepare libraries for the decennial count of every person living in the United States.
The Guide contains practical information to assist library staff in addressing potential patron and community requests regarding the upcoming 2020 Census. The Guide includes:
- basic information about the Census process;
- highlights of new components in the 2020 Census, such as the online response option;
- frequently asked questions;
- a timeline of key Census dates;
- contact information and links to additional resources.
ALA teamed with the Georgetown Center on Poverty and Inequality to develop the Guide, with support from ALA’s 2020 Census Library Outreach and Education Task Force.
ALA plans to provide additional resources for library practitioners in the months leading up to Census Day on April 1, 2020. The Libraries’ Guide to the 2020 Census is available for free download at ala.org/census.
Helping residents and others who use your library's Wi-Fi or public computers to complete their census survey online can benefit your community, schools, and county in the future, since every individual counted helps to maximize federal and state funding for municipal services. Assignment of House of Representatives seats, federal funding apportionment, and our own LSTA "Grants to States" award are all based on the decennial census. More information on the importance to your community can be found in this blog post from last July, and more information specific to Wisconsin can be found in this post from January to help you learn how to determine is a "Complete County" committee has been established in your community or county.

Spotlight on Inclusive Services
The WLA Conference Committee wants you to share examples of how your library strives to include everyone in your library space, programming, and services. Submit your photos and descriptions here.
The images and ideas will be used for displays at the WLA Conference, and possibly on the WLA Conference Archives.
This submission form could take around 10 minutes to fill out depending on how detailed your descriptions are.
You do not need to attend the conference in order to submit your examples of inclusive spaces, services and programs.
Thank you for your time and continued work in providing inclusive library services.

Glenwood City School Visit
268 kids received a library bag with the summer reading brochure, bookmark, pencil and library card application. I just shared with each grade what was planned for this summer at the public library. Some parents came in that afternoon and were already signing up their kids for a library card. One parent said that when they picked up their child the first thing they did when they got into the car was that they pulled out the library bag and said "Mom, Cat in the hat came to see us today and told us about summer reading at the public library and we have to sign up!"
Can't wait to see how many kids participate this summer!

Host Community Screening with Wisconsin Public Television
Partner with WPT and Host a Community Screening Exploring the Lasting Impacts of Trauma and New Approaches to Care
Wisconsin Public Television has had a decades-long relationship with Wisconsin’s libraries and childhood resource agencies through our popular Reel to Real community event partnership with the Wisconsin Library Association.
As part of this powerful community partnership, we’re asking you to consider hosting a free community screening and dialogue around a critical topic impacting our youngest – childhood trauma, and the need for trauma-informed care awareness, support and training.
We encourage you to partner with us and host a screening of Not Enough Apologies: Trauma Stories, an original Wisconsin Public Television news documentary examining the "childhood welfare to adult prison pipeline," and the positive impacts of trauma-informed care.

Book Clubs Made Easy
Having trouble finding enough copies of a book for story time or a book club?
The ILL team at RL&LL can help! We maintain lists of Book Kits and and Early Literacy Kits.
The Book Kit List is perfect for public library book clubs, K-12 classrooms and reading circles. The kits contain multiple copies of a single title and often include a discussion outline. Many titles can also be used with BadgerLink resources such as TeachingBooks and NoveList. Currently, there are over 1800 titles on this list from Wisconsin libraries that are willing to loan their kits.
 
The Early Literacy Kits are appropriate for ages 0-2 and 3-5, these kits provide pre-planned story times on popular themes, and contain several different book titles and other items. Great for childcare centers, classrooms, and homes.
Please keep in mind that kits you find in a search on WISCAT may not be available for loan through ILL. We'd love to see these lists continue to grow. Please Contact Us if you have kits to share and we will add them to the list.
