Join us for our annual general meeting open to all club members. We'll be running a run-swim-run event and a BBQ along with the opportunity to take a role in the club (big or small). Committee membership: what's involved?

Our club wouldn't run without the generous support of our members and volunteers. Being a committee member doesn't require a huge time commitment and can easily fit in around home, family and, of course, training commitments.

We're always on the lookout for members who can help with roles as simple as setting up our transition area for races, helping to check in our members for races, organising social events or BBQs and more...

We'll be advertising some of the roles available in next month's newsletter, but if you're interested in helping or even sharing a role with a friend we'd love to hear from you.

Welcome to the club

If you've just signed up or if you've renewed your membership for another year - welcome to the club. This month we're running through some of the basic information you might want to know for the year ahead. So check out the sections below for information about our club races, training and other member benefits.

Club races

Our club races are held monthly during the triathlon season and are open to members and non-members (at a higher entry fee) of all abilities. In the colder months our races are duathlons (run, bike, run) so no need to worry about the cold water!

All of our races are sanctioned by Triathlon Australia and the roads are closed for the duration of the race. We have water safety present during the swim and our friendly committee members are always available if you have any questions or worries about racing on the course.

Location:

Five Islands Secondary College

192 Military Road, Port Kembla

Schedule:

6:45am - Registration opens

7:30am - Registration closes

7:45am - Race briefing

8:00am - Race start

Entry Fees:

ITC Members: $15

Non-ITC Triathlon Australia Members: $25

Non-ITC and Non-TA Members: $35

Distance:

400m swim / 13.2km bike / 4.4km run

The swim is an open water ocean swim with water safety provided by Port Kembla Surf Lifesaving Club. We assess the safety of the swim course before each race and have surf lifesaving actively patrolling the swim course during the full duration of the swim.

Our race wave starts are based on anticipated finish time and you are welcome to start in an earlier wave if you feel worried about the time it will take for you to finish the swim course.

The ride takes place on a road closed to general traffic. We have volunteers stationed at both turns and first aid support from St John's Ambulance at every race.

The run takes place on the footpath alongside the bike course.

ITC club races are open to athletes of all levels and abilities. On race day, if you don't feel like getting in the water, you will have the option to sit out the swim and race a duathlon instead. You can also race a shorter version of the race. Just chat to the timers on the day.

Training

The club offers training for our members with run squads year round (Thursdays at 5pm sharp, Fairy Meadow Surf Lifesaving Car park) run by club coach Nathan Miller. We also run regular ocean swim training in Belmore Basin (and sometimes City Beach) on Wednesdays during the summer season (daylight savings).

Our run squads are structured training and vary in format and duration every week. We can accomodate all abilities, just let the coach know your level of experience and he can advise you on the right duration/intensity for the session.

Marshalling

All of our members are required to marshal at least one of our races in the season. Members who marshal more than once will earn extra points towards our own ITC Season Point Score, which will put them in good stead for an award at the end of the season.

We provide coordination and instructions for all of our marshals and typical duties involve supporting our race participants at the bike turns and run turns and providing guidance to drivers who may need to take alternative routes to avoid the course. Cheering and supporting our racing members is mandatory!

ITC Season Point Score

Next year we’re raising the stakes and refining the rules for our club season point score to make the competition more fun and increase participation. Hopefully the changes will also encourage you, our members, to take advantage of our club races and be in the running for prizes, free race passes and glory at our annual presentation night.

The new point score will work as follows.

To qualify members must:

- Race in at least 2 club races during the season
- Volunteer/Marshall for at least 1 club race during the season

Points are awarded as follows:

- 20 Points for age group first place, 18 for 2nd, 16 for 3rd and so on.
- 10 points for marshalling additional races
- 10 points for participating in nominated local races (TriTheGong, Aquathon, Club Champs)*

All points are added up over the season to arrive at final scores. Winners will be awarded in each age group and an overall female and overall male winner will be awarded separately.

* Members must nominate ITC as their club during race entry to receive participation points.

NSW Inter-club series

In addition to our ITC Season Point Score (where you can race against other members of the club) you can also race with your fellow club members to earn points in the NSW South Coast Inter-club series.

Next year the NSW interclub series will see some changes that will make the competition a little fairer and a lot more interesting. The same races will count towards the point score, but all distances will now count towards the participation points, which will open up the series even more.

The races included in the South Coast series are:

Monthly Committee Meetings

All of our members are welcome to attend our monthly committee meetings at City Beach Surf Lifesavers in Wollongong at 7pm on the first Wednesday of the month. This is an opportunity to hear what is being planned for the club and have your say in what the club should be doing. It's also a great opportunity to volunteer to help with the activities of the club.
