Berkeley Lab to Host AI for Science Town Hall in September

On September 11 and 12, Berkeley Lab will host one of four AI for Science Town Hall meetings organized by the DOE National Laboratories. The gatherings are aimed at collecting community input on the opportunities and challenges facing the scientific community in the era of convergence of high-performance computing and artificial intelligence technologies. The meetings are open to research staff from universities, national labs, and private industry. Space is limited. Registration is required. (Lab staff should not make travel arrangements until they have received a confirmation email and have completed all registration steps.)

Lab Welcomes Five DOE-CSGF Fellows

Berkeley Lab's 2019 DOE CSGF fellows are (from upper left, clockwise) Michael Tucker, University of Hawai'i; William Moses, MIT; Caitlin Whitter, Purdue University; Max Bremer, University of Texas at Austin; and Yuexia Luna Lin, Harvard University.

Berkeley Lab will welcome five Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellows (CSGF) this year. Drawing from diverse scientific and engineering disciplines, the fellows share a common interest in using computing in their research. Each of these talented students is pursuing a doctoral degree in a field that uses high-performance computing (HPC) to solve complex science and engineering problems.

Postdoc Association Hosts July 4th Picnic

All Junior Researchers Invited

The Berkeley Lab Postdoc Association (BLPA) invites all junior researchers at the Lab (students, graduate students, postdocs, and staff) to join them for a festive Independence Day picnic starting at noon on Thursday, July 4, in San Pablo Park. Grab your Frisbee and bring your family and friends to this child-friendly event. The BLPA will provide a grill, plates, cutlery, water, and soft drinks for a BYOMV barbecue (bring your own meat or vegetarian alternatives). Beers will be available for a donation. Email questions to postdoc@lbl.gov.

Apply Now: SC19 Early Career Program

The SC19 Early Career program is now taking applications through July 31. The one-day workshop for early-career researchers, educators, and technical professionals is held on November 11 and covers common issues and challenges in a research career, including funding, publishing, mentorship, and time management.
Advice on Accessing Elsevier Publications
Because UC and Elsevier could not reach agreement on a new contract, the UC system including Berkeley Lab lost access to all 2019 and later Elsevier content at the end of June. Access to most older content is not impacted. Please visit Berkeley Lab's Library site for advice on alternatives.

Link of the Week: Hood professor, alumnus working to use computers to identify suicidal ideation

Xianlin Liu
The research of CRD's Rafael Zamora-Resendiz and collaborator Xianlin Liu, a Hood College professor, was recently featured in the Frederick News-Post. The pair came to Berkeley Lab with the Sustainable Research Pathways summer program. Zamora-Resendiz stayed on, eventually joining the lab.
