What a SUMMER!

Human beings are an integral part of nature. We are never separate from the natural world, although it's easy to forget it when we spend most of our time inside. Then along comes summer, beckoning us to return. It's time to hike in the mountains, swim in the rivers, pick strawberries and remember what it feels like be a natural person.

I spent the longest day of the year getting lost somewhere in Tahoe National Forest. Mule's ear, pinedrops and wolf lichen were all there to greet me. Alpine creeks were gushing with icy water and I even found a tiny patch of snow...

2019 continues to be a boom year for both butterflies and wildflowers in California. Meanwhile, human turmoil rages from Alabama to Sudan. Keeping one foot in the wild world expands my capacity to face the shadow and helps me become more resilient and whole. Wild nature shows me how to find my place among other beings in a vast and complex world.

I wish for all of you to soak up some sunshine this summer, turn around and shine your light back into the world!

As for myself, I'm stirring many pots this summer, from monthly Trailblazer Cannabis Quests, traveling to the UK for Breaking Convention and supporting at the Ancestral Healing Intensive in Devon, hatching plans with the education team at Decriminalize Nature Oakland and contributing to the new SWANA Plant/Ancestral Wisdom Hub. There are lots of ways to get involved!

Learning from Epigenetics:
Linking Ancestral Wisdom and Science

Recent research has shown that modifications to DNA that occur due to circumstances in our lives are also passed down through generations, leaving embodied imprints of our ancestors experiences in our own genetic make-up. What can those of us working on ancestral re-membrance and ancestral healing learn from what science teaches us about this?

🧿 SWANA stands for Southwest Asia and North Africa. It is quickly becoming the preferred, non-political term (the Middle East is only the Middle East when viewed from the West) to describe this diverse but culturally, geographically and ecologically linked region. What Trailblazers are saying:

"What a glorious way to spend the day! Learning about plants, hiking with a group of lovely souls, and bringing ritual and consciousness to the way we move in the natural world. Kirra taught us how to be a graceful guest in nature - something that will stay with me forever." -A.S.

"Kirra gently walked me to a rarely explored side of my reality in a way that made me comfortable despite my natural inhibitions around the unfamiliar. Her presence gave me a sense of safety that let me wander in the liminal space of my mind until I settled near the edge of a watery universe teeming with life, unbounded beauty and complexity. Peering into the landscape of plants and creatures all around let me come to peace with where I come from, the things that have passed, and gave me a small nudge in the direction nature guides."
-V.E.

Shout out to: Bay Area Conscious Cannabis
I recently experienced a Conscious Cannabis Circle guided by the talented duo, Seb and Javiera. For anyone who loves my Trailblazer Quests, I highly recommend going deep and trying a safe Cannabis journey with these two.
They hold impeccable space for community ceremony and approach Cannabis with the mindfulness and respect the plant deserves.

Ancestral Lineage Healing Intensive
3-Day Intensive with Dr. Daniel Foor
Sept 6th-8th, 10:00am-5:00pm

Upper Gatehouse, Dartington Hall
Devon, England

I'm excited to be traveling to the UK to support this 3-day workshop. In-person intensives provide perhaps the most potent and focused method and ritual container for depth work in Ancestral Lineage Healing, whether you're a beginner or are already in conscious relationship with your ancestors. Participants will learn to relate safely and directly with family and older lineage ancestors, both helpful guides and those still in need, both learning the framework and engaging in experiential ritual work. Folks new to ancestor work, adoptees, and those with a tough experience of family are welcome.

There are only a few spaces left, so register soon! There is some flexibility around cost if needed to keep the work accessible, so check out the options on the registration page. If further assistance is needed, some scholarships are available.

After Decriminalization, Comes Education

Last month, Oakland's City Council unanimously approved a resolution to decriminalize a wide range of entheogenic plants, fungi, and natural psychedelics including psilocibe mushrooms, San Pedro and Peyote cacti, Iboga, extracts and brews like Ayahuasca and indole amine, tryptamine, phenethylamine containing plants. This is a huge win for restoring our root connection to nature and improving human health and well-being. But it's just the first step. Now the real work begins and public education is the top priority for organizations like Decriminalize Nature Oakland.

Many legitimate concerns are surfacing about how decriminalization will play out and the whole nation is watching. Organizations like MAPS and those working towards FDA approval of psychedelics for medical use, Students for Sensible Drug Policy and activists focused on ending the racist drug war are concerned that widespread decriminalization could get messy and derail established efforts. My intuition is that as momentum grows, things will get messy and changes will come from every possible angle, because life is messy like that and endlessly creative!

Key issues I'm aware of include:

*Providing education and access to plant medicine for marginalized folks including black, brown, indigenous, impoverished, queer, formerly incarcerated folks, veterans and others suffering from severe trauma

*Proper training for safe, qualified practitioners, guides and therapists

*Protecting plants/animals/fungi from commercialization and from the control of big pharma

*Ensuring entheogens remain available for spiritual and exploratory purposes, not just for therapeutic and mental health applications

*Conservation of natural sources, protection from over harvesting and  emphasizing reciprocal relationships with the plants themselves

*Conservation of languages, respecting traditional practices, peoples and lands and preventing cultural appropriation
