LISC eyes Historic West End for affordable housing

Ever wonder where the millions of dollars being raised to build affordable housing will end up? A significant portion appears headed for Charlotte’s Historic West End.

Speaking at Myers Park United Methodist Church last week, Ralphine Caldwell, executive director of LISC Charlotte, said the organization has identified the West End as ripe for investment and revitalization.

Toward that end, LISC will name an advisory committee made up of West End residents and leaders to help guide spending in those historically black neighborhoods.

“We want the work and programs we implement within the West End and various other communities to address the actual needs of the community,” Caldwell said. “We aren't just throwing money at neighborhoods and expecting change to happen overnight.”

Caldwell said the West End advisory committee could be in place by April. LISC also will be guided by a second group made up of financial stakeholders -- representatives from various private and public organizations.

LISC, a New York-based nonprofit, was brought in to help direct public and private money being raised to address Charlotte’s affordable-housing crisis. So far, various commitments to that effort total $220 million.

Did you know: In addition to housing, LISC also focuses on seeding small businesses, revitalizing commercial corridors and boosting economic mobility for low-income residents.

HBCU DIGEST
Bennett College names new president: North Carolina's women-only HBCU has named Seattle consultant and former foundation executive Suzanne Walsh as its 19th president. The announcement came six days after the school's board of trustees shared news of the abrupt departure of president Phyllis Worthy Dawkins.

As Bennett’s leader, Walsh will also work closely with the board and the Bennett Reengineering Committee (BRC) to “identify opportunities for Bennett to develop high-demand academic programs, provide exceptional student services and support, improve operational efficiencies and strengthen its overall governance, administration and financial sustainability.”

Mint Museum will open on Tuesdays...again: More than six years have passed since the Mint last welcomed visitors on Tuesdays. Now that's about to change at both Mint locations -- starting tomorrow.

Todd Herman, the museum’s president and CEO, is looking to make the Mint more accessible, museum officials say. Last fall, he added Friday date-night hours at Mint Museum Uptown, extending regular hours until 9 p.m.

Coming Sept. 21: The Mint Museum Uptown will host “Immersed in Light,” a Netherlands-based exhibition that uses sculptures to explore the relationship between humanity, nature and technology. The installation will include five works, one of which will premier at the Mint.

A message from today's sponsor: Aldersgate -- naturally invested in community.
A Taste of Aldersgate

Aldersgate recently completed a multimillion-dollar expansion with even more amenities and dining venues. The community likes to modestly, but rightfully, boast about its 231-acre natural campus. But they also have bragging rights when it comes to food.

Led by Executive Chef Richard, on Wednesday, June 12, Aldersgate took top honors at the 9th Annual Chef Wars, hosted by the Shepherd’s Center. The team prepared a Pan Seared Sea Bass over Mushroom Risotto with a Blue Crab Cream Sauce and a warm bread pudding with crème Anglaise.

While known for its cuisine, Aldersgate is a nonprofit that continues to give back to the community. As a result, the Life Plan Community didn’t bat an eye when asked to host the 2nd annual CMS Cooking up Change Culinary Arts Competition on April 11. Aldersgate is a strong proponent of programs that bring elders and youth together. They embrace and support the eastside and are committed to mentoring and helping youth – especially some of our most vulnerable. And the elders love the engagement.
