Looking for a fun, family-friendly way to exercise both mind and body? Try geocaching (pronounced jee-oh-cash-ing), which is like a modern-day treasure hunt. Geocaching 101 will be an hour-long workshop July 7 at 1:00 PM at the Hartman Reserve Interpretive Center. Geocache basics will be covered, including equipment or cell phone app necessary, types of caches and cache containers, difficulty and terrain ratings, the latest caches installed at Hartman, and more. Attendees will be able to use this information to find their first cache at Hartman after the workshop. Cost is $2.00 per person, ages 5 and under are free. Register at www.BlackHawkCountyParks.com under the Events tab. Enrollment is limited! For registered attendees, there will be a give-away drawing for a free GPS unit and fanny pack, courtesy of Scheels.
2nd Sunday Speaker Series guest presenter for July 14 at 2:00 PM: Laura Sohl-Cryer -  "Saplings, Songbirds and Sonnets: An Exuberant Celebration of Nature through Poetry." Storyteller and poet Laura Sohl-Cryer will begin this event with a performance of several of her original, nature-inspired sonnets. Then, those in attendance will be invited to meander into Hartman Reserve to explore the great outdoors together before coming back to the Interpretive Center for a time of creative writing. There will be refreshments and an opportunity for participants to share excerpts from their own outdoors-inspired prose and poems. No registration is necessary and there is no charge; however, donations are appreciated and will be used for future programming.
The Outdoors
Summer camps are in full swing at Hartman Reserve! Time spent playing outdoors benefits your child’s body and mind. Not only will they be able to connect with nature, but research has shown outdoor activity to enhance self-esteem, improve mood, and reduce stress and depression. Science has proven what John C. Hartman (for whom Hartman Reserve was named) said so long ago:

"The closer the young are kept to nature, the better and happier men and women they will become."  - John C. Hartman, 1938

Summer camps offer many outdoor activities such as creek stomping, archery, fishing, fire-starting, using an atlatl hunting tool, dissecting owl pellets, and creating crafts. Children learn different lessons along the way, like how different animals have adapted to their environment and herbology. Browse summer camps and register online under the Events tab at www.BlackHawkCountyParks.com
Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the Earth.

Hartman Reserve Visiting Artist
Cayli Graham was selected as the 2019 Hartman Reserve Visiting Artist. Cayli wants to “learn more about the species that make up the ecosystem of the Hartman Reserve, both native and invasive. My greatest interest will be in the species that are endangered, threatened, and extinct due to human activity…I greatly desire a better understanding of the environment and to share what I have learned with others." Cayli will be exploring Hartman and will be involved with several activities, including plein air painting. Watch our Facebook page for announcements regarding this program!
Jr. Naturalist Program
See staff or campground hosts to pick up a map at Hartman Reserve, Black Hawk Park, Big Woods Lake, Hickory Hills Park, or McFarlane Park. Then get a specific stamp for your map at each park you visit, attend 3 different programs (such as camps or any other public nature-related program) and do 2 nature-related activities on your own (like biking trails, fishing, canoeing, etc.). Complete all this within a year and you’ll receive a Jr. Naturalist badge!
