Taking The Insurance Message to the Next Generation

The WCI enthusiastically promoted the insurance sector to the next generation at the recent Livery Schools Link Showcase event, attended by 600 primary students and over 1200 secondary school children.

The WCI team was led by iENGAGE co-ordinator Josh Brekenfeld who pulled together a team of young graduates and apprentices from the market: “ They were able to talk to the students as peers. We found that to be very helpful both for the students as well as the graduates who participated”, said Josh.

In addition there were VT headsets that showed the Lloyd’s building and also how to place a risk. The stand also had the Risk game that is supported by various market bodies.

A special thank you to Master Terry Masters, Senior. Warden Rosemary Beaver and Junior Warden David Sales who were on hand to support and answer questions.

FCA Sets Out its Priorities for iNEDs

Karina McTeague from the Financial Conduct Authority brought iNED members up-to-date with the regulator’s current priorities at the June iNED forum.

She said the new business plan focussed on culture and governance and operational resilience and highlighted the important role independent non-executive directors have to play in promoting these objectives. She encouraged the insurance sector to do more to embed a healthy culture, especially by creating a “speaking up” culture within firms.

She discussed the approach that was needed to make a success of the Senior Managers and Certification Regime, saying that clarity of accountability and raising standards were the key elements. The importance of developing operational resilience was also stressed with the help of illustrations of high profile failures in the banking sector.
