Lab Shares Deep Learning Expertise at International Climatology Meeting

Karthik Kashinath
Karthik Kashinath, a computer scientist and engineer at NERSC, delivered a well-received keynote at the 2019 International Meeting on Statistical Climatology meeting in Toulouse, France.
Berkeley Lab’s growing expertise in applying machine learning methods to extreme weather research garnered invitations to present at the 2019 International Meeting on Statistical Climatology. The prestigious event (held every third year since 1979) took place June 24-28 in Toulouse, France. NERSC's Karthik Kashinath delivered an invited keynote at the conference, and Michael Wehner of the Computational Research Division chaired a session on statistical machine learning in climate science.

Q&A: Yelick Reflects on Her Tenure as ALD

HPCwire recently featured a Q&A with Kathy Yelick. In the interview, she reflects on her tenure as associate lab director for Computing Sciences and talks about her plans to pursue research after stepping down from the post at year's end, among other subjects.

Thursday: Support Our Summer Student Researchers

On Thursday, August 1, the Berkeley Lab Computing Sciences Summer Student program will host its annual poster session, showcasing the work of student interns, assistants, and affiliates. Mentored by Computing Sciences Area staff from the Computational Research Division, ESnet, and NERSC, presenters will display their posters from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Room 3101 of Shyh Wang Hall (Bldg. 59). Light refreshments will be served. All lab employees are welcome and encouraged to attend.

DL4Sci School Puts New Data Analysis Tools into Researchers' Hands

Berkeley Lab’s National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) hosted its first Deep Learning for Science School (DL4Sci) July 15-19 at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. More than 175 scientists and students from DOE labs and university research groups participated in the week-long workshop, which was inspired by the popularity of a number of related events that have taken place in the past year, including the ML4Sci Workshop, the Deep Learning Scaling tutorials at SC18, the ECP All Hands Meeting, and targeted sessions at CUG 19 and ISC 19. »See more photos from the DL4Sci School.
