SNAPP - Long Buckby Cubs
Long Buckby Cubs Scouts have been bitten by the recycling bug in a bid to minimise waste. Learning about the environmental damage caused by plastic, the Cubs have taken part in litter picks, planted bulbs in Daventry Country Park, increased their recycling and made a personal pledge to reduce their use of plastic as part of the county-wide SNAPP project: Scouts Northamptonshire Avoiding Plastic Pollution. The project already has 5,000 Cubs and Scouts from across Northamptonshire taking part.
Together the Long Buckby Cub pack has created a recycling centre in Long Buckby village with the Long Buckby Rugby Club, Football Club and many other local businesses supporting their efforts. In their first six months, they have recycled about 11,000 (20kg) crisp packets, 4kg of toothpaste packaging waste and 1kg of Pringles tubes, with plans to collect bread bags and chocolate wrappers. As well as reducing waste sent to landfill, the schemes also provide some additional funds for Cub equipment.
Long Buckby Cub leader Sally-Ann Walden said, ‘I’m so proud of our Cubs. They have taken this challenge to heart and been inspired to make a difference. Five of our Cubs were the first in the county to complete the SNAPP challenge with one even writing to Michael Gove to demand a change in the Government’s attitude to plastic pollution.’
