Time. Talent. Treasure. Testimony.
These are what we call the 4Ts and reflect the ways in which philanthropy is most often expressed in our community.
As a business school professor, I am afforded countless opportunities to express my philanthropy to my students, my colleagues and my community. I spend extra time mentoring students outside of class. I volunteer my talents to help organizations improve their performance. I share my treasure with my favorite charities through monthly payroll deductions. In an effort to encourage students to be resilient yet patient with their careers, I share my testimony of getting my PhD 15 years after initially dropping out of undergrad.
If you’re reading this, I suspect you too regularly share one or more of your 4Ts towards the benefit of others. This is part of our culture; our traditions; our heritage. We are a collective people. We’ve always willingly shared what we have with our brothers and sisters in need. Hence, this is why at the Community Investment Network we hold fast to the motto We are Philanthropists. This simple phrase stands as both a declaration to others as well as a reminder to ourselves that no matter our station in life, if we have time, talent, treasure, or testimony, we have something to give. We need not be “independently wealthy,” we only need one of 4Ts and a willingness to give.
