Dear Friend of Senate District 10,

I hope you had a great week thus far. For those of you not aware, the Senate passed The 2019 North Carolina Farm Act on the floor earlier this week. This annual bill will ensure that agriculture and our hardworking farmers continue to be the driving force of North Carolina's economy and this legislation will ensure that this will be the case in the future. I would like to thank my colleagues and staff for their hard work on behalf of our agricultural community. I am excited and encouraged that this bill will once again support our state's number one industry.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if I can assist you in any way possible.

Sincerely,

2019 North Carolina Farm Act Passes the Senate

On Monday, the North Carolina Farm Act of 2019 passed the Senate with a two-thirds majority and bipartisan support. I am quite thankful to all those staff and members who worked on this bill to improve it. And we still have a few more stops to go.

Next, it has to go through committees in the House of Representatives and we fully expect it to change more. But at the end of the day, this bill will revolutionize our hemp industry, expand the sale of North Carolina sweet potatoes, and just help farmers across the state in general.

However, at the same time work is continually being done to support our agriculture communities, we are once again preparing to fight the latest attacks on North Carolina farmers. Earlier this week, a lawsuit was filed that seeks to undo the right to farm we established in previous farm acts. We are disappointed that lawyers are trying to take advantage of farmers who are working hard to feed our nation. We are ready to defend their rights.

FEMA Approves $2.6 Million for Duplin County Debris Removal

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved nearly $2.6 million to reimburse Duplin County for debris removal following Hurricane Florence.

Beginning Sept. 7, 2018, the county hired contractors to remove vegetation and other debris from public rights of way throughout the county. The approved funds cover work completed through March 22, 2019.

FEMA’s Public Assistance program provides grants for state and local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations to reimburse the cost of debris removal, emergency protective measures and permanent repair work.

Public Assistance is a cost-sharing program. FEMA reimburses applicants at least 75 percent of eligible costs, and the remaining 25 percent is covered by the state of North Carolina. FEMA’s share for this project is more than $1.9 million. The federal share is paid directly to the state, which disburses funds to agencies, local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations that incurred costs.

81 Inducted Into PTK National Honor Society

Eighty-one students were recently inducted into the Beta Zeta Theta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at Johnston Community College for the 2018-19 academic year.

The international honor society recognizes the academic achievement of two-year college students and provides opportunities for individual growth and development through honors, leadership, and service programming. To be invited to be a member of Phi Theta Kappa, a student must have completed at least 12 hours of coursework toward an associate degree and must have obtained a 3.5 grade point average.

An induction ceremony was held May 2 in the Selma Elementary School Auditorium. Dr. Tara Thompson, English instructor and advisor for the Honors Experience, was the guest speaker.

The inductees then recited a pledge of allegiance to the society and to uphold the values of leadership, scholarship, fellowship, and service. As their names were called one by one, the inductees walked across the stage and signed the ceremonial guest book. The induction concluded with a ceremonial lighting of candles.

Paramedic Program on Path to Accreditation

SCC’s Paramedic program has received a Letter of Review for national accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

Under the letter of review, the curriculum version and the continuing education version of the program would be eligible for accreditation. Accreditation assesses the quality of institutions and programs and measures them against agreed-upon standards and ensures that they meet those standards. Institutional accreditation helps to assure potential students that a school is a sound institution and has met certain minimum standards in administration, resources, faculty, and facilities.

Just a few short weeks ago, two students — Devin McLamb and Justin Beasley — graduated the program and moved on to pass the North Carolina paramedic exam. Passing the state exam means they are paramedics certified by the State of North Carolina Office of EMS and they may officially work as paramedics in North Carolina.

Johnston Girl Scouts Named Local Top Sellers for 2019 Girl Scout Cookie Program

North Carolina Coastal Pines has announced that Taylor Cole of Clayton, is the top seller in Johnston County for the 2019 Girl Scout Cookie Program. Cole sold 1,561 boxes of Girl Scout cookies in the annual cookie program that ended in March. Reagan Parrish of Clayton placed second with 1,436 boxes sold and Sarah Stanley of Clayton placed third with 1,333 boxes sold. The 2019 Cookie Program was held January 12 – March 3, 2019.

Participating in the Girl Scout Cookie Program is a long-held and cherished tradition for girls, with recognition as a top cookie seller a coveted honor. Being named a top seller goes beyond what’s in the box as it highlights a girl’s determination to set and achieve goals, develop business and financial literacy skills, and enhance their entrepreneurial spirit. This recognition also demonstrates a girl’s mastery of the five skills: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics as she runs her very own cookie business.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program helps support girls in achieving the goals they set for program activities, community service projects and philanthropy, and ensures all girls are afforded access to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. For over 100 years, the Girl Scout Cookie Program has also provided life changing leadership opportunities for every G.I.R.L (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, and Leader).

Joining the Johnston Girl Scouts, the overall council top sellers are Alyssa Judkins, Ruth Lahl, and Madeline Fischer. Judkins of Durham County placed first by selling 12,474 boxes, and Lahl of Cumberland County placed second with 5,139 boxes. Fischer of New Hanover County placed third by selling 4,152 boxes. Judkins, Lahl, and Fischer will join Chief Executive Officer Lisa Jones in late spring for a celebratory luncheon. Jones will present each girl with a 2019 Girl Scout Cookie Program trophy at the event. Top sellers for local areas will receive a top seller custom patch and their name in next year’s Cookie Gram.
