This Friday marks my final Kabbalat Shabbat service before my sabbatical. I’ll be joined by the original BAJC Kab Shab Band – Stephan Brandstatter on percussion and Daniel Kasnitz on guitar. We’ll be reprising many of our old favorites – including the song above, which expresses so beautifully our yearning for Shabbat, and the wonderful wordless niggun that is often sung with it.
While I am in Israel I will be shul-hopping around Jerusalem, and I hope to bring back some wonderful new tunes. But many of the songs we already sing here in Brattleboro on a Friday night are to be heard in batei k’nesset – synagogues or literally, “houses of assembly” – in Jerusalem as well. When I am sitting in the the kahal – the group – during services in Jerusalem, I will certainly be thinking of all you here in Brattleboro, and sending my prayers, not only toward the skies, but also toward my chaverim in Vermont.
I hope many of you can join Stephan, Daniel, and me to bring in Shabbat, not with geschrigen but with gesingen – not with yelling but with singing! If you can, bring a dessert for the potluck oneg afterward, but come anyway. Let’s welcome in the Sabbath Bride with joyous music and celebration!

Summer Newsletter
The next newsletter will be a summer issue covering July and August and it may not come out until after the July 4th holiday weekend. Please send anything and everything you want to see in the summer newsletter to Faith by June 23rd. Anyone can submit information or suggestions, but committee chairs, in particular, are asked to tell us about their committee’s accomplishments this past year and/or plans for the new year. It is also a good time to share our blessings — let us know about graduations, new jobs, engagements and weddings, and other recent good happenings in our BAJC family. Since the newsletter might go out a little late, please be aware that there is a Saturday morning service scheduled for July 6th at 10:00, service leader TBA.

Make Your Voice Heard at the BAJC Annual Membership Meeting
June 23rd at 7:00 pm
Time for a lot of BAJC members to get together without the need for prayer books! Come to socialize and break bread together and to make important decisions for the upcoming year for our community. All members and their families (kids included) are encouraged to come at 6:00 pm for a community barbecue that will include beef burgers, veggie burgers, kosher franks, condiments, and cold drinks. Salads, side dishes, and desserts will be potluck, so please bring something to share.
The business meeting, starting at 7:00, will include a farewell blessing from Cantor Kate, a “state of the shul” address by the presidents, a treasurer’s report and presentation of the budget proposed for the fiscal year beginning on September 1st, election of Trustees to the Board, and other reports or business or questions that might come up. Please come and let your voice be heard!

This film tells the story of a Palestinian and an Israeli who were once dedicated fighters willing to kill and be killed by one another for their nations who, when faced with the tragic loss of their daughters in the conflict, chose to do the unexpected and instead of seeking revenge, turned from enemies into brothers.
Film will be followed by group discussions with participants from the
Jerusalem Peacebuilders’ Vermont Leadership Institute

Dear BAJC Community,
First off, I would like to express my deep appreciation for the support that my family has received from you around the passing of my papa. We wouldn't have been able to lay him to rest if it weren't for an anonymous person in this community paying for his burial. We wouldn't have been able to afford his footstone if it weren't for BAJC. It warms my heart to know his final resting place is among a community who genuinely cared about him, a place he had helped to make beautiful, and is next to Saul Bellow.
Attached are some pictures of papa volunteering at the cemetery.
Attached is also his obituary, and flyers for the different gatherings on June 21 and 22, to honor and in honor of him, that you are all invited to.
The gatherings:
1. His footstone unveiling ceremony/service will be held Friday, June 21, at 5:30 p.m. in the Shir Heharim Cemetery.
2. To honor his love for sharing things with people, I am putting on a yard sale, to take place on Saturday, June 22, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 43 Organ St., Brattleboro. Items for sale will include things papa left behind, things left to me from his parents, and things I have collected along the way. This will be the Landis Family's FINAL yard sale, as it is time to let go of the things I don't need to be carrying any more. This is something papa was constantly working on doing in the last 5 years or so of his life.
EVERYTHING MUST GO!
This is also an opportunity for anyone who wants to visit with me and reflect on papa's life, which is most welcomed. My husband and I also welcome the support of anyone who want to lend a hand with either set up or clean up (feel free to contact me and let me know, alyse.m.landis@gmail.com).
3. After the yard sale, there will be a potluck dinner, honoring his love for food and good company, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Brattleboro Area Jewish Community, 151 Greenleaf St. Feel free to bring a potluck item you know he would have enjoyed.
Some of his favorite foods and ideas for potluck dishes:
Chopped liver, potato latkes with apples sauce, gribenes, brisket, all kinds of barbeque, smoked salmon, pecan cinnamon buns, cold cherry borscht, tradition Jewish food with a modern twist (example: article on modern Passover recipes)) anything unusual (foods and drinks)... be creative (we all know he was).
If you decide to make a dish please contact Andy Weisman, andiwaisman@gmail.com, and tell her what you are bringing.
Request for potluck dinner support:
1. set up (5:30-6:30 pm) and clean up (8:30-9:30 pm)
2. Truck, to transport some things for the potluck dinner (5 pm at 43 Organ St),
2. provide rides for previous patients of papa's who want to come but can't get transportation (bus stops running that late). Groundworks Drop In Center and Turning Point will let me know if there are people with that need.

Gardening...flowers and what else?
BAJC has a multi-season project to improve the path from our overflow parking in the lower field up to the sanctuary and to spruce up our outdoor classroom and event space. Thanks to some amazing volunteers (Thank you Amanda, Eric, Moss, and scouts Phil and Zach!) we've removed multiple wheelbarrows worth of invasive plants and started planting out the hillside with low maintenance plants benefiting our native pollinators. This year we'll be working more on the actual pathway and planting out the event space with flowers that our deer neighbors (ha ha, get it?) have indicated they'll let us grow.
Have more ideas for this year? Please share!
Come help on the Second Sunday in the Summer, May 12 and June 9 from 3:30 - 5:15. That's during Hebrew School, so stay, schmooze and work in the great outdoors.
Continue to join us for gardening in the heat of the Summer from (tentatively) 8:30-10am on Sundays July 14 and August 4 (1st Sunday due to Tish'a B'Av).

Cantor Kate is looking for one or two people to rent her furnished home in West Brattleboro from Sept. 2019-May 2020. The house has two bedrooms, one bathroom, and a basement with a washer and drier. On a country road, 1.5 acres with gardens and lawn. No pets.

The BAJC Cemetery Committee is looking for a pre-owned used working metal detector for finding the pins marking plots in our cemetery, when selling a plot, or identifying pin markers for burial, and monument placement. The pins were placed by the surveyor a number of years ago, and some are now well underground, especially in areas that are less populated. Since BAJC is a nonprofit organization. A donation of one that is no longer being used can be tax deductible.
