We often see the result. The smiling beautiful couples on Instagram spending a weekend in a sepia-toned cabin. The artist at their solo show opening. The athlete making a winning shot. I want that. I want that happiness. I want that success. I want that admiration. I want that. At least that's what my mind tells me. Lately I've been reminding myself that before every result is the process, the work. The late nights, the hours spent doubting, sweating, messing up, reaching out for help, crumbling, getting back up, dreaming.

For the past five years, I've been able to tell people that I'm an artist. Then they ask if that's my full time job because they assume it can't be. I am able to reply with a yes. For the first time in those years, I took some time and space and didn't start the year with grants and work lined up. Now that means a lot more seeking out opportunities. It can be overwhelming to see how much is out there and how many things I've applied for and haven't gotten. So today I remind myself to keep doing the work. That's what got me here and what will keep me going. To wherever I'm going.

What are you working toward? Where are you going? I'd love to hear.
I'm excited to be an Artist-An-Resident at Dream Farm Commons, an artist run exhibition and project space in Downtown Oakland where radical imagination, visual works, and social practice are happening. I'll be exploring the meaning of a block by spending one week on the block where Dream Farm is located. I will explore, talk to people, and document it all to create a body of work opening on July 11 7pm-9pm. Save the date!
I'll be teaching the first ever iteration of my class "Creative Interventions in Public Space" in August at Root Division in San Francisco! Take this class if you:
  • want to make the City less lonely
