FIRST TRACKS WITH THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to the June edition.
By now you will have received confirmation of any seasons bookings that you may have applied for. We were oversubscribed for most of the weekends so it is likely that some of you will have missed the odd night or two. In case you were wondering, the Ski Club Champs weekend will not be confirmed until closer to the time as we endeavour to get members into neighbouring ski clubs.
It is great to see that we have a lot of interest from members and all we need now is some snow.
Unfortunately we will be cancelling the Mid Winter Christmas Party (6th July) as we have minimal bookings for that weekend.
With the Gondola progressing and due to open as planned on the 22nd June it is timely to just point out to members a couple of salient points about this coming season.
- Knoll Ridge Café will be offering different ‘styles’ of eating ranging from a sit down buffet area, fast food like last year in the upstairs area whilst downstairs a food fair type environment serving differing types of food from container style serveries. Eating your own lunch (paper baggers) will not be allowed upstairs and leaving your day packs in the area will not be allowed either.
- The Gondola is a non-stop top to bottom (and vice versa) experience. This means that you have to ski all the way down to the Top of the Bruce each time. Obviously this will have an impact when snow conditions at the start and end of the season are marginal down the Rockgarden. Based on this we anticipate more use of the Knoll and Valley T-Bars (the Waterfall Express has been dismantled).
- Although it will not really affect us as a club, members need to be aware that use of the Rangatira chair is restricted to skiers only (no foot traffic except for one exception). There will be no downloading at all and the only opportunity for uplifting foot traffic will be at the 4pm closing each day. This will impact Clubs on Hut Flat and surrounding areas.
Over the summer we have seen increased use of the Lodge. This though has highlighted that not all members are completely familiar with the operation of the Lodge. I would like to emphasise that all members become familiar with the operation of the Lodge over the coming months. Committee and experienced members are available to show you the processes. In parallel with this is a reminder that we all ‘own’ the lodge and as such need to treat it as you would your own home.
I will sign off with the following quote from an existing life member:
We are a Club. A club is not a hotel, a motel or a backpackers. A club offers and takes something different from members. It offers belonging, involvement, a sense of ownership, sharing and responsibility. It means mucking in, doing a daily duty and getting on with others.

We have just over a month to go before the first social race/event of the season (Christiana Derby, Saturday 3rd August) and we are after expressions of interest from anyone who is interested in having a go (in previous years we have had members as young as 5 and as old as 70 race).
There are a series of 4 club races over the season each being 2 weeks apart culminating in the Taupo Ski Club Champs on Saturday the 21st September (Christiana Derby – 3rd August, Haensli Trophy – 17th August, Rangatira Trophy – 31st August, and the Ngauruhoe Trophy – 14th September). This allows plenty of practice for those who want to have a go at the Club Champs. With the exception of the Club Champs (individual based) these are all team events with 4 or 5 (with at least one female) skiers in a team and categories include Junior (under 16), Open and Masters (over 40). It doesn’t matter whether you have done it before, or how good you may think you are, it is a fun time. Best of all is that it is free (sponsored by the club). In addition there is a Juniors (under 18) only race event called the Tongariro Juniors to be held on the 7th September.
We would like to see as many teams as we can get entered into these events. We are particularly keen to get junior teams (under 16) and we need more Master (40+) and Open class women.
You get to wear a race bib, ski a race course, beat your Mum or Dad (or your kids) or your mates and then to cap it all off you can go to a party/prizegiving that has significant amounts of food, refreshment and best of all heaps of spot prizes (there have been helmets, goggles, ski’s, sweatshirts, ski jackets, phones, gloves and accommodation vouchers amongst others in previous years).
All you have to do is to let the Club Captain (Anthony Moss) know as soon as possible. He would like to build up a list of keen members so that where possible he can pre-register for the events (last minute entries are not a problem though).
The races are on the Saturday morning (weather dependent), usually about 10am in the Valley. Don’t forget, your skiing ability is irrelevant, other than being able to ride the Valley T-Bar and you get bragging rights if you beat your parents, mates or your kids. So, let’s see you all at the start line for the Christie.

We need to bring to the attention of all members the impact of recent Health and Safety legislation. It is up to all of us to be responsible and this is even more important in our Lodge with the risks of fire, storms and eruptions (amongst other things). To help facilitate this we are holding nightly club safety sessions (approx 5 mins) during the winter season.
In addition there are new food preparation regulations which we will be introducing over the coming weeks. These are mostly common sense (like everyone in the kitchen washes their hands) and while not too onerous will require more discipline.

Workshops
Based on the success of the ski waxing workshop put on by Hendon and the team they will be running some more ski waxing/tuning workshops later in the season. I recommend members attending these. For those members who were a bit slow in purchasing the Ski Wax Toolkit special offer, a little birdy has told me that there may still be some available. See Hendon at Gordons Outdoor Equipment.

The image at the top of this newsletter is part of the Show Your Stripes series.
The ‘warming stripe’ graphic is a visual representation of the change in temperature as measured in New Zealand over the past 100+ years. Each stripe represents the temperature averaged over a year (the average temperature in 1971-2000 is set as the boundary between blue cooler and red warmer colours). The stripes start in the year 1901 and finish in 2018.
