Internationalizing Finnish Science: Building Sustainable Bridges to Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean (BRIDGES)


FinCEAL+ UPDATES AND FUNDING

1. FinCEAL+ BRIDGES Rolling Call for Grants under the Partnership Support Instrument remains open
Through this call, researchers based in Finnish institutions can apply anytime for one of the following funding modalities:
  • Open Travel Grants - max. 1700€
  • Event Grants - max. 3500€
  • Research Visit Grants - max. 3500€
The planned activity must: be directly related to building research partnerships with colleagues from Africa, Asia or LAC and be relevant for one or more of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Please note that applications will not be evaluated in July, so if your planned activity is taking place in early autumn, we recommend to apply by the end of June. All applications sent in July will be evaluated at the end of August.

2. FinCEAL+ BRIDGES Delegation to the Inaugural European Research and Innovation Days Selected!
The BRIDGES project launched a Targeted Travel Grant Call to support the participation of researchers and experts interested in European research and innovation policies in the 1st ever European Research and Innovation Days to be held in Brussels from 24 - 26 September. We've selected a delegation of 4 experts from 4 Finnish Higher Education Institutions to highlight Finland's perspective in discussions of the future research and innovation landscape. 3. FinCEAL+ BRIDGES Reflections from Key Policy Events in May:
  • FinCEAL+ BRIDGES delegation's experiences from the United Nations Multistakeholder Forum on STI for the SDGs
    The United Nations has been organizing a special Forum dedicated to discussing the role of science, technology and innovation (STI) for the SDG’s since 2016. The fourth annual proceeding was held at the UN headquarters in New York City on 14-15 May. This year, the crosscutting theme of the Forum was STI for Ensuring Inclusiveness and Equality. For the third year in a row, FinCEAL+ BRIDGES organized a delegation of senior members of Finnish academia to attend the event. Read more about the impressions of the delegation
  • UniPID and FinCEAL+ BRIDGES Reflect on Spring Forum 2019 (KV-Kevätpäivät)
    UniPID and FinCEAL+ BRIDGES participated in Spring Forum 2019 (KV-kevätpäivät) which was hosted in Joensuu on 16 and 17 May. The thematic focus of the Spring Forum was 'Global Responsibility' and discussion was built around Finland's potential role in abating the global education crisis. 4. FinCEAL Infobank: Add and edit project information, and create a researcher profile to showcase your expertise!
The FinCEAL Infobank now includes a dedicated expert database, a new function that avails more services and greater utility to the researchers in Finland and their partners abroad. All Infobank users can now benefit from increased visibility for their own expertise, identify potential cooperation partners and engage in knowledge exchange with peers directly and quicker. The database is also used by Finnish ministries and missions abroad to identify experts for different purposes. 5. Lovely Summer and Relaxing Holidays Everyone!
The BRIDGES team wishes everyone a lovely summer and relaxing holidays!
The team will be away from office for most of July and sporadically in August. The Partnership Support Instrument Call will remain open for applications in July and August. However, note that all applications received during this period will be processed once at the end of August and funding decisions will be announced in early September.

H2020 Future and emerging technologies FET Open Calls
FET Open supports early stage science and technology research exploring new foundations for radically new future technologies by challenging current paradigms and venturing into unknown areas. A bottom-up selection process widely open to any research idea builds up a diverse portfolio of new research directions. Early detection of promising new areas, developments and trends, along with attracting new and high-potential research and innovation players, are key factors. More information

LIFE Programme - Open Calls
The LIFE programme is the European Union’s funding instrument for the environment and climate action. The current funding period, 2014-2020, has a budget of 3.4 billion €. 2019 calls for proposals are open now. Nordic Climate Facility Call for Grants. DEADLINE 5 September 
The Nordic Climate Facility (NCF) finances innovative climate change projects in developing countries. Financing is allocated on a competitive basis with thematic calls for proposals arranged annually. This year’s theme is: Testing the viability of innovative climate solutions. H2020 Energy Efficiency Call 2020. Call opens on 2 July
The last Work Programme for Secure, Clean and Efficient Energy under Horizon 2020 will be published on 2 July 2019. It is designed to facilitate a smooth transition to the future Horizon Europe and LIFE programmes. The two intervention areas:  "Buildings in energy transition" (B4E), and “Smart and clean energy for consumers” (EC) bring together 18 topics focusing on energy efficiency as a cornerstone of the energy transition. The work programme operates on a budget of close to €120 million of EU funding. More information

Call for papers: ANSOLE DAYS 2019 & BALEWARE 2019: Sustainable Energetics and Water, 9-13 September, Tumba & Kigali, Rwanda, DEADLINE 15 July
ANSOLE and BALEWARE will co-organise a 5 day event combining scientific lectures and practical training on photovoltaics and water (waste-water treatment). The event targets participation from individuals, companies, and research organizations from Europe, Africa, Latin America and elsewhere.
  • Call for abstracts: The event has opened a call for abstracts on topics related to sustainable energetics and water (technological, economic and societal aspects). Submission deadline is 15 July.
  •  FinCEAL Plus BRIDGES Africa will open a Targeted Travel Grant Call to support the participation of researchers with accepted abstracts!

Call for applications: The PASET Regional Scholarship and Innovation Fund RSIF PhD scholarships, DEADLINE 22 July 
The PASET Regional Scholarship and Innovation Fund (RSIF) is an Africa-focused fund that aims to help create a critical mass of highly skilled scientists, professionals and innovators in the Applied Sciences, Engineering and Technology (ASET) fields. It is an initiative of PASET - Partnership for skills in Applied Sciences, Engineering and Technology. The Call is for a 3-4 Year Doctoral Training Scholarship in PASET RSIF Priority Thematic Areas. Horizon 2020 Info Day on Societal Challenge 2 calls for proposals of 2020, 4 July, Brussels, Belgium + Webstream
This information day is intended to give attendees insight into the Societal Challenge 2 calls for proposals of Horizon 2020, for the Work Programme of 2020, covering Food security, sustainable agriculture and forestry, marine and maritime and inland water research and the bioeconomy. The event is organised to coincide with the BIOHORIZON NCP Brokerage event for Societal Challenge 2, on 3 July 2019, in order to allow potential applicants to network and develop proposals. The event is free of charge and registration is set to open in May. More information

Business Finland: Info sessions and training events for Horizon 2020 in the Autumn - Webinars
In August-September, Horizon 2020 experts in Finland, the NCP liaison officers (National Contact Points, NCPs) will hold a series of info sessions presenting all future H2020 calls in the final program period. Check out the dates and themes here! (in Finnish only)

  • NOVA PhD course series "Climate Change Entomology in the North", 26-30 August, University of Eastern Finland, Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences, Kuopio. The International Conference on Sustainable Development "Creating a unified foundation for the Sustainable Development: research, practice and education", 4-5 September, Rome, Italy
ICSD, is an interdisciplinary forum for scholars, teachers, and practitioners from any professional discipline who share an interest in, and concern for sustainability in a holistic perspective, where environmental, cultural, economic and social concerns intersect. ICSD 2019 Conference provides a forum for the sharing of ideas, presentation of research findings, and discussion of professional issues relevant to Sustainability Science. Horizon Europe: New Parliament, new Commission, new Agenda, 10 September, Brussels, Belgium
This Science|Business public conference will invite reflection on the legacy of and lessons learned from Horizon 2020. It will also look to the future and gather high level recommendations for the new Parliament and incoming Commission on what Horizon Europe might realistically be expected to deliver through to 2030. Horizon 2020 Environment and Resources Information Days & Brokerage Event, 16-17 September, Brussels, Belgium
The Information days will focus on the Horizon 2020 Work Programme 2018-2020, Challenge "Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency & Raw Materials" - 2020 calls. The event targets potential applicants to the 2020 calls for project proposals under the Horizon 2020 Challenge 5 "Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials". The Finnish Presidency Event: European Days for Sustainable Circular Economy, 30 September - 1 October, Helsinki
The European Days for Sustainable Circular Economy aims to promote a low-carbon, climate resilient circular economy. This flagship event is held in Helsinki during Finland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The event will consist of three parallel conferences:

Enterprise Europe Network Annual Conference 2019, 21-23 October, Helsinki
The annual conference is the main event of the Enterprise Europe Network and it brings together business advisers from more than 600 Network member organisations from more than 60 countries as well as representatives from the European Institutions and key external stakeholders.This year's edition is organised by the European Commission and the Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises in partnership with Business Finland, Helsinki Region Chamber of Commerce, and Turku Science Park. 2nd phase of registrations details and more information.  

Global Science, Technology and Innovation Conference (G-STIC) 2019, 20-22 November, Brussels Belgium
G-STIC is conference series focused on building knowledge bases and global networks to support the technological transitions needed for the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. Themed, ‘Creating an Impact on the Achievement of the SDGs,’ G-STIC 2019 will build on the results of previous editions in addition to discussing the policy changes needed for the technological transition to sustainable societies. The different thematic sessions will dive deeper into integrated technological solutions with significant impact on the SDGs, and further strengthen the multi-stakeholder communities around the different thematic clusters of G-STIC. National education sector development cooperation seminar, 26-27 November, Helsinki
The Finnish National Agency for Education EDUFI, The Ministry of Education and Culture, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs (MFA) and FINGO invite education sector experts to an event about solving the global learning crisis and identifying successful multi-stakeholder collaboration models. The MFA is taking steps to develop comprehensive country strategies in the next country strategy period, starting 2021. The aim is to define the Ministry’s objectives for Finland’s cooperation with the partner country, describe the scope of the Finnish activities and the available MFA means and instruments for reaching the objectives. This requires coherence between the activities and instruments, as well as stronger synergy and inter-linkages between actors. Session proposals can be submitted in English or Finnish by 1.10.2019. Global Forum on Women in Scientific Research (GoFoWiSeR), 18 -19 July, Dakar, Senegal
The second Global Forum on Women in Scientific Research (GoFoWiSeR)aims to facilitate a global conversation that will bring together over 200 participants including leaders of research institutions, funders, female scientists and other stakeholders, to discuss the trends and strategies toward increasing women’s numbers and experiences in STEM. GoFoWiSeR is supported by a consortium led by African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) and includes the African Academy of Sciences (AAS), UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the UK Department of International Development (DFID) and South Africa’s National Research Foundation (NRF). Species on the Move 2019, 22-26 July, Limpopo, South Africa
The 2019 edition of the Species on the Move conference brings together scientists and natural resource managers working in the disciplines of global change, biogeography and evolution, and relevant in contexts of natural resource management, biodiversity management and conservation, and theoretical ecology. This interdisciplinary conference is co-convened by the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) of the University of Tasmania, Australia, and Rhodes University, South Africa. Africa Protected Areas Congress (APAC), 18-23 November, Nairobi Kenya
The 1st edition African Protected Areas Congress (APAC) will gather African leaders, citizens and interest groups from all over Africa to discuss the role of protected areas in conserving nature, safeguarding Africa’s wildlife, delivering vital life-supporting ecosystem services, promoting sustainable development and conserving the region’s cultural heritage and traditions. French-South-African Science and Innovation Days, 2-3 December, Pretoria, South Africa
The first French-South African Science and Innovation days aim to promote cooperation in research, training,  and innovation between the two countries, and to stimulate it in the light of the challenges South Africa faces. The event targets: scientists, students, start-upers, civil servants, business and innovators. The first French - South African Science and Innovation Days will be held as a side-event of the Science Forum South Africa. More information

The 8th ASEM Sustainable Development Dialogue (SDD): Enhancing water partnership towards sustainable development & inclusive growth, 19-20 September, Siem Reap City, Cambodia
The 8th ASEM SDD will be hosted by Cambodia National Mekong Committee (CNMC) – an Inter-Ministerial institution of the Royal Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia for coordinating the sustainable management and development of the Mekong River Basin, in cooperation with its key member Line Agencies. More Information

IUFRO World Congress 2019, 29 September-5 October, Paraná, Brazil
For the first time ever, Latin America, will host the IUFRO (International Union of Forest Research Organizations) World Congress. The Congress will be organized and coordinated by the Brazilian Forest Service and EMBRAPA. Approximately 3000 participants are expected to converge in Paraná to discuss forest research. The European Commission invited Member States to join a Mutual Learning Exercise (MLE) in Widening Participation and Strengthening ESIF-H2020 Synergies. This report summarises the outcomes of the MLE which was carried out during 2017-2018. Download summary report here

Thematic partnership workshop: Reflections on the new partnership approach and future steps - Towards Horizon Europe
The partnership representatives of P2Ps, PPPs plus EIT-KICs and FET Flagships met on 15 and 16 May in in Brussels to discuss how to increase synergies and collaboration in Horizon Europe. A number of concrete ideas concerning the sustainability of existing and proposed partnerships were raised. Find out more in the workshop report!

Finland's Annual Development Report - 2018
The Annual Development Report provides a summary of the strengths of development cooperation and policy development and the areas for improvement. The 2019 Africa SDG Index and Dashboards Report 
The 2019 Africa SDG Index and Dashboards Report is the second annual report on the progress of African countries towards achievement of the SDGs. The report focuses on the efforts that African governments are taking to incorporate the SDGs into their national strategies, budgets, public engagements, and coordination among branches of government. University of Turku cooperates with the UN Economic Commission for Africa to promote sustainable development in Africa
Kalervo Väänänen, Rector of the University of Turku and Carlos Haddad, Executive Director of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), outlining the institutions' mission to promote Africa's sustainable industry, innovation and infrastructure. An Africa-Europe Agenda For Rural Transformation (Report)
The Task Force Rural Africa, was set up under the new Africa-Europe Alliance and was launched in May 2018. The main objective of the task force is to provide advice to strengthen the Africa-Europe partnership in food and farming. The Task Force Rural Africa has published a landmark report encouraging more cooperation in the agri-food sector between the EU and Africa. Bridging Existing and New Approaches for the Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation Between Finland and Africa 
This report is an output of the FinCEAL initiative. It aims to collate the experience and the lessons learned during 6 years of the initiative's activities in support of and enhancing Finnish cooperation with Africa on Science Technology and Innovation (STI). Link to publication

Asia

The Creative Resource Guide: Crafting Laos and Cambodia
This ASEF - Asia-Europe Foundation publication was researched and written by Magali An BERTHON, a freelance cultural documentarian with extensive research knowledge in Southeast Asian textiles and sustainable processes. This guide presents a directory of 20 most pioneering organisations in Cambodia and the Lao PDR engaged in crafts and design initiatives around 3 main thematic areas: heritage preservation, innovation and community empowerment. Closing the Loop: ASEM’s Transition Towards Achieving a Circular Economy
As part of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM)-wide research on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 for the ENVforum Annual Conference 2018, this publication reviews the implementation experience of ASEM Partner countries with SDG 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production. Link to publication
