Beer Sailing Club Newsletter

Summer is well and truly here! The sun has been shining and the rain has backed off a little for the time being. July promises to be excellent for Beer Sailing Club. But what's been happening at our Club? We've had two instalments of our development sailing series with suppers, a sell out Gin and Jazz evening, a heap of club racing and sociable bar opening times.

Development Sailing and Supper

We held the first of our sailing development days on Saturday 1st June with glorious sunny weather and a light breeze. Perfect for developing sailors to get afloat. The bay was awash with different coloured sails from a variety of boats, including Bahias, Lasers, Picos, Mirrors, an RS200 and a beautiful lugger. In all, we had over 25 sailors of all abilities on the water - a great start to the series.

Once ashore, the sausage and mash provided by Jurassic Kitchen went down a treat. After dessert, the young sailors made a great job of clearing plates and washing everything up! It was great to see so many “new” faces, especially with so many children.

The second instalment of the series was held on Saturday the 22nd of June. We had 24 people out on the water in 11 different boats. There were a lot of firsts! Under the watchful eye of Hugh, Alan and Helen in the patrol boats and Emma in the hut 4 of the new sailors took out boats on their own for the first time. Many of the others had their first experience of helming. We also had the first race with many of the boats taking part. This was won easily by Michael in the RS200, but I am sure that the handicap committee will have a say yet 😊

We can't wait to see everyone again this Saturday the 6th of July for a similar amount of fun and learning on the water. Remember to get your food order and intention to attend emails sent to Sarah asap.

Sailing Report

The sailing conditions through June have varied quite a lot from too much to too little breeze, but we have had enough racing to complete the Spring Series with steady numbers turning out to enjoy the action.

There has also been success for Daniel Thompson at the Island Barn Laser Open. A fleet of 15 Laser Standards arrived to contest the open meeting. In the first race, Dan was first around the top mark and stayed there until the finish. Conditions were 10-20 knots and very shifty and gusty. In the second race he got overtaken on the third lap but pulled it back on the reach to take another bullet. During the final race, the wind shifted suddenly on the last upwind leg, resulting in a quick swim and a discarded sixth place! A great day to take the trophy with perfect sunny weather and sailing conditions.

Daniel was back in action at Beer on Sunday as the fleet enjoyed some of the best sailing conditions yet. The summer series is now fully underway. Hopefully, we'll be welcoming more boats back to the fleet over the coming weeks and will see numbers push into double figures.

Volunteers and Helpers

Thank you to everyone who has stepped forward to honour their pledge of help on the membership form. Whether you're behind the bar, helping at social events, in the patrol boat or the Race hut, it's all hugely appreciated.

If you have not yet put yourself forward, don't worry, there is still time to get in touch before we knock on your door. We're more than happy to guide you through how to help if you are unfamiliar. Volunteers are the lifeblood of the club and it's always good to see people willing to spread the load for the benefit of all.
