News from the North

From the Toronto Raptors’ historic win to Pride Month, there has been much to celebrate across the U.S. and Canada in the last two weeks. And Canada Day is right around the corner! Stay connected with us across the United States to join the festivities in your community.

All Good Things

  • Earlier this month, the Association of Women in International Trade named Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, the “Woman of the Year!” In accepting, Minister Freeland told the crowd “All of us here, as women, have been excluded, and we know how harmful that is. All of us here, as women in trade, know that – done right – globalisation makes everyone more prosperous. So let’s work together to make trade work for everyone – and let’s keep chipping away at the glass ceiling while we are at it.” Read more from her keynote speech.
  • Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale visited Washington and met with United States Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Kevin McAleenan, and agreed the Canada-U.S. border is sound, secure, and efficient. Read more about the visit, and ways Canada and the U.S. are collaborating in North America and abroad.

Celebrations Across the U.S.

  • The Toronto Raptors captured Canadian hearts around the world when they secured the NBA championship title against the Golden State Warriors. Even Canadians in San Francisco gathered for a watch party to support their home team!
  • Pride Month is also in full swing. This year, we mark 50 years since the partial decriminalization of homosexuality in Canada. It is one step in the ongoing battle for equality for LGBTQ2 communities. In Washington, the Embassy participated in the annual Capital Pride Parade, and Canadian Consulates General across the U.S. will be showing their pride too. See if there is a celebration you can join in your area!
  • Our Consulate General in New York is so excited for Canada Day, they started the party a week early with Canada Day in New York and Pennsylvania.

Coming Up: Prime Minister Trudeau visits Washington

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is in Washington, DC this week for meetings at the White House and on Capitol Hill. We will have a recap in the days ahead. Until then, read about his visit and his friendly wager with Speaker Pelosi.
