NURSING NIGHTMARE

Fresno State nursing master's program loses accreditation: The university announced the master's program within its nursing school lost its accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

The loss was attributed to a failing to provide adequate documentation to the Commission during its accreditation process.

Fresno State announced it would not admit any students for the fall semester due to the status change. Meanwhile, 23 students are currently affected by the move, with CCNE set to return for a review for spring accreditation.

If the school reactivates its accreditation, current students will be unaffected upon graduation.

Not the Department's first accreditation issue: Another program in Fresno State's Health and Human Services College – a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certificate – was hit with an accreditation lurch earlier this year after the university discovered it was operating without accreditation

CCNE is also responsible for accrediting that program as well.

OPERATION RED REAPER
100 arrested in Nuestra Familia/Norteño sweep: An undercover operation led by Federal, state, and local law enforcement in the southern Valley led to the arrest of nearly 100 people in an effort to cripple a drug operation originating from Pleasant Valley State Prison.

The network, which combined the Nuestra Familia prison gang and Norteño street gang, was

alifornia water officials are advising people to stay out of the water in the San Luis Reservoir due to an algae bloom

Exposure to the algae currently blooming can cause a number of maladies including – among others – eye irritation, skin rash, and flu-like symptoms.

California's Department of Water Resources issued a separate advisory related to pets visiting the reservoir, as they are susceptible to illness due to the fact that they are likely to drink the water.

While the advisory focuses on most water recreation activities at San Luis, DWR does state that boating is not restricted and that boaters should avoid swimming or direct contact with the water.

LAW & ORDER

Fresno judge strikes down watered down Felony Murder Rule: In a ruling Wednesday, Fresno County Superior Court Judge Brian Alvarez said that California's attempt to weaken the Felony Murder Rule unconstitutionally amended two separate propositions.

The Felony Murder rule is a legal doctrine that states any accomplice to a felony that results in the death of a person is culpable for that killing.

In 2018, Gov. Jerry Brown signed a law greatly limiting the rule to merely those who actually committed the killing or those who intended to kill during the felony.

In his ruling, Alvarez said the law improperly amended 1978's Proposition 7, which reinstated the death penalty, and 1990's Proposition 115.

Slow march through Appeals: The ruling is one of many similar holdings across the Golden State.

Trial judges in Los Angeles, Orange, Santa Clara, Riverside, Yolo, Kern, El Dorado, Calaveras, and San Bernardino counties have similarly ruled the Felony Murder Rule change unconstitutional.

WRESTLING WOES
Ex-Fresno City wrestler accused of sexual assault released: Former Fresno City College and current University of Minnesota wrestler Dylan Martinez was released from custody by Minneapolis authorities without charges filed.

Martinez, who sat out this past season as a redshirt sophomore for the Gophers, and standout and aspiring Olympian Gable Steveson were arrested on suspicion of criminal sexual conduct Saturday.
WHAT WE'RE WATCHING
Bitwise goes on a blitz: The tech incubator/development firm announced Wednesday it hauled in $27 million as part of a Series A venture capital funding round.

In recent years, the company has built out a downtown campus by rehabbing buildings in Fresno's urban core, working to develop local tech firms, and expand tech education.

Now, it's eyeing expansion into another Valley community: Bakersfield. Bitwise CEO Irma Olguin, Jr. announced the company is beginning to explore opening a 50,000-square-foot hub in downtown Bakersfield.
