Dear Parents,

The sun has finally broken through, almost, it feels, for the first time since Prize Day! Good timing for those who have just finished exams and for lifting the spirits of all as we move into the final week of term.

It is always sad at the end of the school year to say farewell to pupils and staff as they move on from Downside, but, as a school, it is essential that we are open to and celebrate all opportunities for growth and change. On Sunday we were delighted to welcome many of the pupils who will be joining us in September as they came with their families for a familiarisation day. Judging by the fun which was had by all, we can look forward with genuine excitement to next year.

ECO WARRIORS

As you may know, the School is going single-use plastic free from September with the guidance of the Downside Environmental Committee. The Committee is putting together a pledge with the governing body to become a carbon-neutral organisation by 2050. Read more.

HORIZON

Downside pupils have created a student-led School magazine called Horizon. The publication very much reflect the pupils' voices and contains a variety of excellent articles that reflect on our lives and the different dynamics within the School. Read more and access the Summer edition.

TITANS CUP

The annual Titans Cup finished last night. The Cup is a football championship for Powell House whose objectives are to develop friendship and a sense of community among House members. Read more.

GCSE PHYSICS OLYMPIAD

This year, for the first time, top set GCSE Physicists from Downside School entered the GCSE British Physics Olympiad. The Olympiad aims to encourage the study of Physics and recognise excellence in young physicists through four challenging annual Physics competitions. Read more.

LOWER SIXTH-FORM RETREAT

Pupils always look forward to their retreat days – they are a chance to pause, reflect and give something back. And wherever they go, they take the warmth of the Downside community with them. The retreat theme focussed on homelessness, drug and alcohol addiction, and recovery. Read more.

ART EXHIBITIONS

This year’s Downside School art exhibitions were a roaring success, and showcased the incredible and inspiring work of GCSE and A Level pupils. Read more.

E-SAFETY
With the Summer upon us, our pupils will have the opportunity to take part in all their favourite pastimes. For many of them, this includes gaming online, and one of the best ways that parents can help to keep their children safe online is to actively engage with what their children are doing. Simple activities such as asking them to tell you about the game or what they do or even spending some time watching them play can not only help you understand what is going on but allow your child time and space to talk with you if they find some of the content online disturbing. Yours ever,
