MESSAGE FROM CBH MISSION CONTROL
A New (and Improved) CBH Web Site

There are some items where “a classic look” is something that is agreed on by many.  A “little black dress,” or a two-seater sports car come to mind as examples.  But no matter how spectacular a website is, possibilities expand, functions evolve, and fashions change. So, bethaverim.org is about to put on a new skin and change some of the backside parts of the site.

We expect that this site will be more than beautiful — it will also allow us to use some new web tools to serve you better.  It is inevitable that, in rolling out many new pages (or new versions of old pages), we will have problems and mistakes. No matter how much testing and proofreading we do maybe we will copy over some wording that has not been true for years or maybe a link will go to nowhere.

So, I would like to enlist your help.  Think of this as hunting for the “electronic afikomen,” and tell us what you find.  We will be grateful for the information whether or not we feel we know how to fix it.

We might not have all the answers but part of the backside changes are that we will be going from an arcane website technology hosted by a local company to a WordPress website hosted by the Union for Reform Judiasm.  Our local people are winding down their business and URJ has a pretty good deal (free) that allows us access to parts of the broad, deep river of WordPress developers and their products.  But only to certain parts of the WordPress universe, so that the URJ team does not have to install and support too many add-ins to the sites they host.  We think it is going to be a winning combination for us — but we will always have the option of transitioning to another WordPress host if we find something that really is not fitting with our needs or dreams.

Our address on the web will remain the same, so on July 1st, you should notice a difference!

— Doug Walter

FOR PARTNERS
Message from (the other) Board Co-President

Shalom CBH partners,

Last month you got to meet my co-President Barry Klein on this page and this month you get me.  In coming months, hopefully the other 11 Directors can also make at least a brief appearance.

I am Steve Cohen.  There are so many of you I have not yet met and look forward to meeting.  I have been in Davis and a partner at CBH for only about seven years.  This is my fourth year on the Board so I am apparently a glutton for punishment.  I believe I was asked to serve based on having suggested and co-led a class with Rabbi Greg entitled “Wrestling with Tough Jewish Questions,” and frankly, I am still wrestling.  But in the meantime, I saw an opportunity where I might be of some help, as well as be exposed to and learn more about what being Jewish really means, so here I am.

I am East Coast born, bred and theoretically schooled, in Philadelphia, Boston, and upstate New York, but have been in California so long I remember the winters back east with some fondness.  I am an attorney, until recently a trial lawyer, first as a deputy DA in Sacramento, then I switched over to represent all the “not guilty” defendants, then plaintiffs with any kind of injury.  Now I work for a small state agency connected with the Legislature, generally charged with proposing revision of law that is no longer working the way it was intended.

I have a daughter Kira who, in an amazing coincidence, recently graduated from law school, and is now a fledgling attorney herself. And a dog named Raleigh, who absolutely never does what we want him to, but we love him anyway.

Together with Barry and the rest of the Board, I am very much looking forward to continuing to work toward creating a true community here at CBH.  With so many interesting and decent people in our midst, I see tremendous potential for CBH to become far more, for so many, than just a place to attend two services in September and otherwise be invisible.  No specifics yet, but watch this channel!  And please, come say hello and talk to me about whatever is on your mind, whenever you see me. Or email me at considereverything@gmail.com.  Really — I truly want to hear whatever you have to say, especially if it is about how we can make CBH a place that many more of us can consider a second home.

Until then,

Steve
Congregational Photo Partner Directory
First Session — June 23 & 24

More than fifteen years ago our community produced a congregational directory with photographs of partner families.  The Board thought it might be time for a new photo directory.  Lifetouch will take the photos and develop the directory for distribution.

The photographers will be on campus for the first photography sessions on June 23 and 24 from 12:00 - 6:30 p.m., as well as several day in September (TBD).  There is no cost to partners for the photography and one copy of the directory will be free.

To set an appointment or get answers to any questions please contact Nancy Loeb Williams at nlloeb@case.edu or call 530-756-8935.

YOUTH AND FAMILIES
Confirmation 2019
Congratulations!

Mazal tov to our Confirmation students, families, and Rabbi Greg for an incredible year of learning and a beautiful Confirmation service on Shavuot.  These high school students spent a year studying Jewish leadership, current events from a Jewish perspective, and creating ethical wills.  In addition, they enjoyed a day trip to Jewish San Francisco.  This level of commitment to Jewish education, both from the students and their parents, is to be commended. Congregation Bet Haverim is blessed to have such dedicated teens and parents. Congratulations to Marley Adler, Aidan Cohan, Aaron Eckey, Lily Frohlich, Eliana Moore, Sophia Nachmanoff, Talia Ordonez, Arianna Rosenberg, Brianna Singer and Ethan Schroeder.

TIKKUN OLAM/SOCIAL ACTION
Sophia Sherman's Mitzvah Project (Phase I)
Until July 1

For her mitzvah project, Sophia has chosen to work with the TESE Foundation which is a local non-profit that helps support rural school children in Zimbabwe (tesefoundation.com)

Sophia was told that the organization needs donations of new underwear and socks in youth sizes (not infant or adult).  A delegation will be bringing your donations to Zimbabwe if you drop them off in the CBH office.  Donations will be collected through the end of this month.

In Shona, “tese” means “together.”

The TESE Foundation arose from the urgency to send children in Zimbabwe to school. Every year, so many students drop out of school because they do not have the financial means to pay for tuition, uniforms, personal hygiene packs, and exam fees. Like many other developing countries, the Zimbabwean government does not offer free tuition. The lack of an education leaves the children without many options, resulting in many getting married at an early age.

Do you know of a local activity that congregation members should be informed about that will better our community and improve our world?  Please let us know and submit an item to the e-tone.

תיקון עולם     Tikkun Olam

Contemporary usage of the phrase shares with the rabbinic concept of mipnei tikkun ha-olam a concern with public policy and societal change and with the kabbalistic notion of tikkun, the idea that the world is profoundly broken and can be fixed only by human activity.

Tikkun olam, once associated with a mystical approach to all mitzvot, now is most often used to refer to a specific category of mitzvot involving work for the improvement of society — a usage perhaps closer to the term’s classical rabbinic origins than to its longstanding mystical connotations.
