SONNY DAY

U.S. Ag Secretary returns to the Valley for town hall: Sonny Perdue, the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, is returning to the San Joaquin Valley for a town hall meeting with local farmers next week.

Perdue will be hosting his meeting at the Merced County Fairgrounds in Los Banos a week from today.

The former Georgian Governor has been ever-present in the Valley since his appointment to the USDA. Last year, he hosted a similar town hall at the World Ag Expo following its opening ceremonies.

RSVP is required to attend the event. More details can be found here.

LAW & ORDER: TBD
Fresno on-the-clock over gang member stipend proposal: After a heated Fresno City Council meeting, the controversial proposal to pay gang members to refrain from shootings is making a slow advance.

On a 3-2 vote, the Fresno City Council authorized Mayor Lee Brand and his administration to assess the controversial Advance Peace program and other alternatives for reducing gang violence and return back with a solution within 90 days.

For the original program to make any progress, City officials and activists would need to identify a private funding source for the so-called "shooter stipends."

The move also included setting aside $200,000 in taxpayer funds for administrative expenses related to whatever program is brought forward

All Eyes on Dyer: Earlier in the week, Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer indicated his support for the gang intervention concept behind Advance Peace. On Thursday, he said his comments had been misinterpreted to include support for the program's stipends to gang members.

Said Dyer: "I am philosophically opposed to giving money to any gang member."

He reiterated his support for gang intervention, pointing to other programs operating in Fresno including Hope Now for Youth and Fresno EOC's Street Saints.
NURSING THE HANGOVER

Fresno State's Health and Human Services College faces uphill: In case you missed it, Fresno State's health department has two programs currently unaccredited.

The first, its nursing master's program was announced to have lost its accreditation on Wednesday after the college failed to provide sufficient documentation to the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

The second, revealed in March, was the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certificate program. Unlike the nursing master's program, this program operated without accreditation for a number of years before students reported being unable to receive certification from nursing licensure bodies.

Students in that program were offered a refund. Two students took the offer. Eight remained in the program.

A class action suit lingers: A former student in the practitioner program, Andrea Herington, filed a class action civil suit against Fresno State alleging breach of contract in April.

In her suit, she argues that graduates of the program put the university on notice to the lack of accreditation prior to enrolling students for the Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 sessions.

FRESNO GRIZZLIES
Grizzlies split doubleheader with Bees: Completing a rainout game, the Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Salt Lake City Bees 8-4 on Thursday before suffering an 11-12 loss in the second matchup of the day.

The Grizzlies currently hold the lead in the PCL standings with a half-game lead over the Sacramento RiverCats.

What's next: The Grizzlies take on game three of six in Salt Lake tonight. First pitch is 6:05 p.m.
WHAT WE'RE WATCHING
