Strategic Plan and a New Website

Earlier this week we held an event to unveil our Strategic Plan and guiding vision for the MacPherson Insitute going forward.

We also unveiled a redesigned website. Many of you came out to celebrate with us and to hear about what we've been working on. Our sincerest gratitude goes out to the McMaster teaching and learning community - to all of you who attended our event earlier in the week and those of you who have offered feedback and engagement through various ways in the last year. Thank you.

You can read the article on McMaster's Daily News to get all of the details.

Opportunity to Submit Project Proposals for the Student Partners Program

The Student Partners Program (SPP) aims to establish meaningful partnerships between students and staff/faculty working on teaching and learning projects at McMaster. Since the program was established (in collaboration with the Arts & Science Program) in 2013-14, nearly 400 students from across campus have taken part, working in partnership with faculty and staff to design and develop courses and curricula, create pedagogical resources, and conduct teaching and learning research. Students become full members of project teams, and are compensated for their contributions.

We’re currently seeking submissions for projects to be included in the SPP in Fall/Winter 2019-20. See the program guidebook for further information about what kinds of projects are appropriate, and what is expected of individuals participating in the SPP. Anyone on campus (faculty/staff/student) working on a teaching and learning project that aligns with the program criteria (see pp. 3-4 of the guidebook) can submit that project for consideration. Note that students proposing projects will have to find a faculty/staff member willing to collaborate with them on the work prior to submission.

Potential projects should be submitted, using the following online form, by July 8, 2019: https://surveys.mcmaster.ca/limesurvey/index.php/927416.

The student partners program review committee will vet all project submissions, and projects appropriate to the program will be advertised to students in an open call. We also take student interest into consideration when finalizing project decisions, so you will be notified if your project has been funded after the deadline for student applications (by August 9). If you have any questions, please contact the SPP team (mi_sap@mcmaster.ca)

PLEASE NOTE: THE JULY 8 PROJECT SUBMISSION DEADLINE IS FIRM. LATE SUBMISSIONS CANNOT BE CONSIDERED.
Instructional Skills Workshop for Faculty and Instructors

The Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) is designed to enhance the teaching effectiveness of both new and experienced educators. Participants review basic ideas about teaching, check current practices, and try new strategies and techniques. During the 3-day workshop, participants design and conduct three “mini-lessons” and receive verbal, written and video feedback from other workshop participants.

In fulfilling the time and participation requirements of the ISW, you will earn an internationally-recognized Instructional Skills Workshop certificate.

Upcoming ISWs at McMaster

The fourth ‘International Students as Partners Institute’ (ISaPI) will be hosted by the University of Adelaide, Australia in association with McMaster University, Canada from 10-12 July 2019. The overall aim of ISaPI is to build the capacity and understanding of faculty, staff, and students to develop, design, implement, and disseminate initiatives that promote the practice of students as partners in learning and teaching in higher education. The first three ISaPIs were held at McMaster University, where it will return in 2020. Around 250 staff/faculty and students participated in roughly equal numbers.  In 2019, staff and faculty are encouraged, where possible, to bring a student with them, or students to bring a member of staff/faculty with them to participate in a three-day interactive Students as Partners (SaP) workshop. Participants will be able to focus on aspects of SaP of most interest to them. The workshop will be run by a new team – including Dr. Catherine Anderson and Paige McKenny of McMaster – so previous participants are encouraged to join us again.

The Transforming Futures: International Perspectives on Research Based Education Conference will also be held at the University from 14-16 July. There is a discount if you participate in both events. For further details and booking please go to: https://cvent.me/nG97q

McMaster IT Student Advisory Committee delivers year-end report

Christa Morrison from the MacPherson Institute, and Marzena Kielar with University Technology Services (UTS), both co-chairs for the Information Technology Student Advisory Committee (ITSAC), presented the committee’s first year final report to the McMaster IT Executive Committee.

In its inaugural year, the committee met monthly during the Fall and Winter terms and helped to ensure students had a voice in the development of the McMaster IT Strategic Plan. Moving forward, this committee will ensure students remain an integral part of the ‘Connected McMaster Community’ – a strategic pillar within the plan
